So that explains why they were sat behind us in the stand !. I don't care what McCall says about the game HE got it all wrong again. Back came McClaren and Bullock in the middle and they looked ineffective and added nothing to the team. That meant Furman on the left and LAW sitting behind Boulding. Two inspirational players out of position AGAIN. Even when Thorne came on and played two proper strikers up front we didn't look threatening. He had an ex premier league/international player on the bench who would have provided the strikers with something and decided to bring on the out of form Colbeck for the last 10. Honestly in my opinion the manager has lost it!

we lost a centre half: so there was one replacement readily available.

we lost a centre forward so we had to make severla changes to accomodate that--sorry that is just got good enough.

What was wrong with Thorne--a cricked neck-- good ness can he nort even sleep without getting injured!!


Sorry to say but we really have little to look forward to now:another season in the bottom division with a completely new team as there is no continuity at playing level.

525 supporters:a round trip of whay:700 miles plus:10/11 hours couped up on coaches to watch a sunday league set up where two players are on the booze-- two children who could not keep their hands off the mini bar by the sound of it? Neither player should be allowed to wear the shirt again. 525 supporters made the not inexpensive trip and have been cheated.

All other supporters have similarly been cheated as have their team mates and the directors.

Over the past few monbths I have supported both Conlon and Clarke when all around me have been calling for their heads. However, If what is being quoted above is true i.e. boozing the night before an important match (or any match for that matter), and I have no reason to disbelieve it, then I am sorry but they should be kicked out of the club. I think you have this completely wrong Freddy. All players have contractual obligations opposite disciplinary issues (like any employee) and within that it could well stipulate punishment for alcohol infringements - I would be amazed if they didn't when you consider that these are after all, "sportsmen" and when a drinking culture is so prevalent in football and modern society. So as you seem to know so much about management issues, you will know that if this is the case, McCall had no choice. I also think you are being a little unfair in mentioing "junior" management as though thsi is what he and Jacobs are, the reality is that they will have been exposed to this type of scenario as players over many years, decades even.
The asy option for Stuart would have been to slap them with a fine - it would have made his selection easier for the match but he didn't, he did what all good managers have to do which is to do the difficult but correct thing. No way should they have played if they had broken club rules about drinking. Besides which, there is a reason that players are not allowed to drink for 48 hours before a game - it impairs performance. So, you are advocating picking 2 players who could well have still been under the influence? Sobering up on the subs bench is a silly thing to say.
Playing 2 players who could well still be under the influence of drink is actually letting everyone else down more than not playing them. By your thought process, players can do whatever they like without consequence - this is not good management......infa

One last word on this from me, if they have been boozing before a game that means so much to us and our club, they should never play for us again. Disgraceful.

I believe there to be a drink culture at the club and maybe, just maybe, Exeter was the first time management had proof positive or were faced with teh fact that details may be published hence the need for action.

These players have let everyone down and they should not be allowed to wear the shirt again.

McCall admits we have no cutting edge this has been obvious since Thorney got injured, unfortunately he looks past it now to me!

We have all been crying out for a striker since the deadline day so why the hell haven't we got one.

both players are past their sell by date:they can add nothing more to thsi season so get rid now. Clarke is on a pay as you play contract so by not playing him we save wages andConlon will be gone at the season end so why not ship him out on loan as he serves no useful purpose to the team.

With Thorne having to be swathed in cotton wool, even at bed time, to prevent injuries and too many other players the wrong side of 30 it seesm as though the promotion push is simply too much for tired old jouneymen pros.

Incidentally take a look at Conlon's carerr moves to date: severla short term stints here there and everywhere-- can any infrerence be drawn from this!!i.e managers have sussed him and a possible booze problem much quicker than we have done!!! just a thought

I have alluded to this before on this site that it is alledged by some that Conlon is always out on the pi55 in Leeds.

I only care about Conlon when he is on the field of play, I care for the other 10 players around him.

It seems the conduct of Conlon effected the team more than Clarke. What I mean is,with Thorney injured Conlon would have stepped in but because of ill discipline that was not an option to SM. I dont know what has gone on but knowing the two players who missed training the conclusions about alcohol are fairly good assumptions.
They have let everybody down and as far as I am concerned they should be in the last chance saloon.
My big question which doesnt seem to have been asked of McCall is why did neither Brandon or Gillespie get 20 minutes to change the result?
What is the point of having them on the bench and not use them? I could understand if we were 1 nil up and we were protecting the lead but at 1 down it seems ridiculous to ignore them.
I understand SM commented that the system and players in certain positions worked. It did NOT work, we lost. Why do we worry so much abbout the opposition. STOP over complicating things Stuart and play your best players in their natural positions.
Leave Law and Furman alone in the middle, add McLaren if needs be away from home to go 5 in midfield but why play one winger and leave 3 on the bench.

i made other suggestions about the way the team was set up: basically a load of changes which arose only from Conlaon as the other was easily covered.

I just cannot see it: sm SAYS law scored four goals in a reserve team game--against whom we do not know-- and thinks he is the best we can offer up front.

So you don't think that players should be dropped for indiscipline? That would send a great message to the rest of the sqaud. If they broke club rules then you drop them and fine them. McCall was right to do this and it should ensure that the rest of the squad know that they tow the line or don't play.

Clarke and Conlon have let the side down badly. We have cover for Clarke in Rehman and Ainge and could recall Bower if needed. As others have pointed out it is glaringly obvious that we need another striker. The strength of Thorne and Boulding is as poachers, niether of them benefit from the ball been lumped forward to them, a good strong target man would be of great benefit to the team. I dont think any of us expected Peter Thorne to go through the season injury free which made it even more important that we had cover and competition for the strikers. That the management do not seem to realise this is strange to say the least. There is no way Conlon or Clarke should start on Tuesday but if Thorne is still not fit we might have to play Conlon. (He owes the club and the fans big style) Playing Boulding as the lone striker is not the answer. We should play our strongest available team with all players in their best posistions and go with a positive approach. Sensible use of substitutions would also help. Yes Stuart is a legend and i am sure most of us want him to stay and do well but at the moment I just dont understand his tactics and selections. Our fate is in our own hands and we have to make sure it stays that way. We cannot afford to slip up again at Bournmouth but I fear we just might.

Again we are let down by certain players but this time before they even get onto the pitch.Conlon although he has tried never really looks like an athletic footballer and now we know why.Clarke at times this season has made basic mistakes a lack of concentration etc not picking up his man at set pieces where he has cost us many a goal,was this also down to drink.Reguardless of what happens between now and the end of the season we now know its the end of the road for these two.

Personally i think Stuart should speak with the board and pull out all the stops to secure poss another 2 strikers and ensure the two of them never play for us again.It should be made clear that no one will let this club down in this way again.I believe that tyker is correct in saying that they is a drinking culture within the club and maybe its down to Stuarts inexperience that he hasn't dealt with it before now.We all know Stuart liked a drink himself at times but he seemed to know when and where this was acceptable unlike some people who in all walks of life never seem to know when enough is enough.

Nicky Law scored four for Sheffield United's reserves against Lincoln's reserves in a match on 1 October 2008. Because of this one performance, McCall thinks Law is a stand in striker!

If I remember rightly, Bazza scored five in a reserve game earlier this season, but it doesn't mean he is a world beater. McCall is simply clueless. If, as seems apparent, McCall's hand was forced due to the injury to Thorne and the behaviour of bazza, then surely you would start with Jones up front or even try Brandon. To play your most influential midfielder as a make-shift striker is plain daft.

McCall was quoted as saying it was the right thing to do, that we were the better team, but just didn't have the killer instinct. No SH!T Sherlock. Playing Law up front and you expect a 'killer instinct'! He maybe a quality player, but he isn't a striker!

As others have suggested, we had most of the play, created the better chances, forced plenty of corners and never really looked like breaking them down. However, we still decided not to bring on Gillespie or Brandon and persevered with 2 defensive midfielders until the last 5 minutes, despite having three wingers on the bench.

i'm not going to jump on the anti-mccall bandwagon as we COULD still get promoted this season but i'd be lying if i didn't have my concerns.

a)the hard earning city fan who makes expensive away trips in todays crazy money world deserves to know what the players are up to if they do wrong - if they were on the lash then kick em out regardless of who they are - we dont pay money to watch people who don't appreciate the support or are not willing to fight for the cause.

b)furman and law are the reason why we even have a sniff of promotion yet we ask them to play anywhere just to accomodate bullock n mclaren who are cart horses at best - what happened to best team rather then best 11???

c) this has been my concern since the 1st game of the season....SUBS. Mccall seems incapable or not brave enough to really go for a game in the last 3rd when it is clearly there to be won. Why can we not make subs before the last 15 mins? what can we only make like for like subs? why have injured players on the bench? and still bring them on before fit players? how how players coming back from injury supposed to get match fit this way?

although it does sound like i'm jumping on the anti mccall bandwagon i'm not but these questions need to be addressed and quickly!!! I still have faith but am getting more concerned by the day. Will be interesting to see hwta happens tomorrow if we are 0-0 with 30 mins left.

3 ppints - do you mean points or pints SkiptonPaul? I know which one Conlon/Clarke will prefer...

I am not keen to jump on the team's backs but having been to Barnet and Rochdale recently I have been incredibly infuriated by the performance/tactics. Although Exeter appears a better performance and was just missing some finishing, the substitutions beggar belief. As easy as it is to blame McCall, he is relatively inexperienced and I wonder why Jacobs/Wetherall don't get any stick. The vast majority of managers need a first class assistant and I doubt that McCall is getting much advice or help from either - surely the chairmen should have insisted on an experienced coach as a foil to McCall?

I am hopeful that the team will prove everyone wrong again tomorrow, but if we are going to get up this year it will have to be automatically - there is no way we will get through the play offs. They'd better buck their ideas up fast.

absolutely correct. been pointing out to the buloock lovers for ages that the guy offers nothing but height. Last season he wasn't up to it and this season albeit through injury as looked worse. the guy can't pass barely shoots for a so-called attacking midfielder. Its got to be said, promotion would be a disaster. We would be whipping boys and come straight back down and Stuart would walk or be sacked.
MK Dons and Posh had players and teams capable and good enough to play at a higher level.We don't.
I hope we don't go up and Stuart uses this season to learn from his mistakes and get things right for next season.
We need players with potential, not past their best.We need younger, hungrier players who can perform at the next level.We should be able to attract the better players at our level and not on loan!
Stuart will learn from where he has gone wrong this year and will have the opporunity to put it right and lets hope he does.

Salty although I would love to go up, I love my club more. So whatever divison we are in I will still be there, as I and another 5 of my friends have already bought our season tickets for 2009/10.

Hurry up and get James Hanson from Guiseley before it is too late. Give this lad an opportunity to show what he can offer rather than listening to reports. Let the lad show what he can do with his own two feet and head and i can guarantee that he will get City up this season. Maybe swap him for Conlon and Clarke.

So very true. We have heard all the rumours regarding the pair being out drinking. Add that to the alleged trip to the horses and not many will doubt it's credulousness.

HOWEVER, I have heard that the incident was not related to drink and instead was a fight between the pair of them. Whatever the 'indiscretion', rumours will continue whilst fans are unaware of the true picture.

HOWEVER, I have heard that the incident was not related to drink and instead was a fight between the pair of them. What is your issue with me?

I simply said that there were TWO rumours being circulated about Clarke & Conlon's indiscretions. One was that they had been drinking, the other that they had been fighting each other.

Why does that mean 'I am having a laugh'? I didn't start either rumour!

Very true Soulman, but you have tagged the wrong post. Your comments were aimed at 'spanglishbull.uk', not the above posters.

I agree with you though. If he likes the Bulls, he should stick to them and stay away from the Bantams (that said, don't they stab bulls in the back in Spain?). If he doesn't like Bradford and loves his beloved place in the sun, I repeat your question to him. Why do you come on here?
