Australian Chris Nero today gave his Bulls team-mates an insight of what to expect from Huddersfield Giants – now led by his former boss back home.

Giants newcomer Nathan Brown is in charge for Super League XIV following five years at St George Illawarra, where he was the youngest NRL head coach in history.

Aged just 29 when first installed, Nero played under Brown for a year in Sydney before switching to Super League himself – ironically also with Huddersfield. Now firmly a Bull though, the in-form centre is preparing to face both his old chief and team-mates on Friday night.

“Nathan’s a very smart coach who gets his teams playing real well,” said Nero.

“I was there in his first season at St George. He throws a lot of things at you but he’s got Huddersfield playing already.

“I think really highly of him; he’s a really good coach who Huddersfield will definitely improve under.

“They’re moving the ball around well and seem to be using the full width of the field a lot but also putting a lot of plays on around the ruck.

“With Nathan being an ex-dummy half, he’s got them working there and he’s also very good at little short-side plays.

“He’s pulled some of those out of his drawer and it’s hard for sides to play against them so we know what to expect.”

Nero, who bagged 48 tries in 118 games during his time with Huddersfield, delivered one of his best Bulls performances yet when they drew against Hull KR on opening day.

He touched down and caused all sorts of problems for the Rovers defence but said: “It’s been a little stop-start for us with that match being nearly two weeks ago.

“That was frustrating but it’s given us some time to work on some fine-tuning.

“Now we’re looking forward to Huddersfield, especially me with them being one of my old clubs.”

The visitors pulled off an excellent win in Perpignan before going down 23-6 against St Helens on Sunday.

Nero said: “They did really well against Catalans and we’ve seen some of the highlights of that match.

“They lost against Saints on Sunday but hung in well and could maybe have even nicked it at the end. They’re going to be hard to beat but we are ready.”
