City recruit Asian ambassador

City have today unveiled their first Asian ambassador.

Well-known Bradford entrepreneur and restaurateur Omar Khan has taken up the post aimed at actively encouraging the Asian community to get more involved with the club.

Khan said: “We need to integrate with the community. Asian people need to understand that the club would embrace them with open arms.

“I want to go out there and help people, especially youngsters, become part of this club no matter their background. Bradford City is their club.”

Joint-chairman Mark Lawn, a long-time friend of Khan, said: “We want to make it more friendly for the Asian community as a whole to come to the ground.

“There have always been opportunities to get involved but by bringing in Omar, they might feel happier getting in touch. We believe he can be a conduit for the Asian community.”

See tomorrow's T&A for a full interview.

Is this not racially biased ? If we recruited someone to specifically target youngsters who were from a non asian background, I suspect there might be a few people getting upset,,,,, but because its the other way round, it's ok ??

Good move Mark this should break down any barriers, We are a community club so getting the community involved has to be good, This may lead to higher attendances and a new shirt sponsor Well done ML.

would be interested to know if Omar was an active City supporter before this appointment. if yes then great, he can spread his enthusiasm. if not, I think its a bit hollow. must say he has a very nice restaurant, but the food ain't what it used to be!

Who's in charge of the family brain-cell today Old Perculiar (sic)?
It is because the Asian community is a minority in Bradford that this move is not "inverted racism" which is the term you are alluding to.
Though the Asian community in Bradford is a minority, it is substantial in size so how else would anyone possibly refer to it?
Plus, in case you haven't noticed, we don't need to "target people from a non-Asian background" as the ground and club is already full of them.
It is views and mind-sets like this which make our City such a divided place.
This is a brilliant idea and long overdue.

Spot on Meat Pie. This is a very good idea and a great appointment. Hopefully he can persuade the Asian community to come down to Valley Parade on match days. Equally, as Tyker mentioned, we may even get a couple of star footballers in the longer term. Well done Lawn.

Anything that raises the profile of Bradford City with the area of Bradford with all groups must be a good thing.
It shouldn't matter what creed, religion, skin colour anyone is if they want to watch football at Valley Parade.
Football is a universal game and should be open to everyone.
After all it isn't going to cost them much is it with the season ticket offers we have at BCFC.

Can't believe anyone would consider this to be in any way racially objectionable. Who better to break down barriers? City have tried community stuff before and it hasn't worked. Omar is likely to have some sway in Bradford and is therefore ideal for the role - his (or anyone elses) race is irrelevant.

If you could afford the bus fare you would realise that Bradford is not the worst, not the best, and better than most. But you would not know that because as far as you are concerned if it was not for "those lot" your lot would be better. It never will, your hope is finished.
I would have preferred Bradford City to get a young, second generation Asian who is culturally in tune with both communities rather than a mate who's restaurant you happen to attend and welcomes the publicity. If there is a job going I might be interested!

Why not enroll on an English Language course as you cannot even manage to spell your own user name correctly. It is: 'Peculiar' NOT 'Perculiar'. Whilst your reading your dictionary, see how many synonyms you can find for the word:

Interesting to see the number of comments on this forum. I know some statistics suggest that more than 50% of young Asian boys take part in football but very few of them go to watch any. Interestingly, a much larger percentage watch footy on the television and support either MUFC or LFC.

I think Asian people are very interested but have never found any inner burning desire to support their local team and time is right to change this trend. My only reservation would be how Mr Khan can do anything to persuade people like me to support their local club.

Not that I have got anything against the guy - but he just doesn't strike me as someone who knows about football or young people's ways of thinking that gives him the edge.

BTW - It's nice to see that people haven't responded to this article with the usual racist nonsense.

I just hope this is not a publicity stunt, as there have been similar initiatives before, and nothing has materialised.

Hello everybody, I found the work done by the board positive towards integration of the communities at Valley Parade. I hope this gets more people from Bradford to watch my beloved Bantams.
I've been watching City now for a good number of years even when working away or going on holiday the first thing I pack is my Claret and Amber Shirt.
A lot of people may not know that I am an Asian from Bradford; born and bred. When I go down to VP on match days it makes me feel at home singing away feeling the passion. On the terraces WE as fans are the 12th man and it doesn't matter if your black, white, Asian, rich, or poor. I know it is a cliche but this is why they call it the beautiful game.
I often convince many of my Asian friends to come down to VP with me on matchdays to experience it for themselves. I hope in the near future going through Bradford I will see more people wearing Claret and Amber rather than strips from other City's/towns.
I hope that all on this site see this news as a positive for the club and a good step towards a better City....

Odshapeballs - I do live in Bradford actually though I work in MK Monday to Friday. This is actually my choice as I love coming home though in doing so my life is made considerably harder than if I moved down south.
By the way, house prices in Bradford have risen way above the national average over the past 5 years due to the close proximity of Bradford to Leeds; the finance centre of the north - and the depressed proce of property in the area prior to this boom period.
So, I don't need to come and look at "El Paradiso" 'cause I live there and live there through choice, not necessity.
Fine if you want to call me a "muppet" though it's you who needs to check your facts.

Rubbish! Where has that belief come from. You are talking total cr*p. City already have a following from all backgrounds. This is the start of positive descrimination. Nice to hear from so many Asian people on this topic. It is just a shame there isn't the same enthusiasm when watching City on match days. It is good to hear your thoughts and feelings. Perhaps you could offer Messrs Khan and Lawn some guidance on this matter.

The people above have said they enjoy watching City or classing them as their team. However, that part of the City (near to the ground) is hugely Asian populated, but I would anticipate that less than 100 of the local community attend on match days.

When taking my children to the parks, do I see children brought up in Asian families playing football? No, they are instead playing cricket. What is the fascination of cricket in Bradford?

As a suggestion, I believe we should replace the 'cross-bar challenge' with a 'one wicket bat and bowl challenge' LOL

On boxing day last year I was running late and missed kick-off (and the minute's silence). As I was running to the ground through the deserted streets, I was fairly gutted to see 3 young asian kids kicking a football around in the street behind the bradford end. I mean they're less than 10 metres from the ground and clearly have an interest in the game, yet they're not in the ground. They would have probably qualified for free tickets being under 11 if they were accompanied by an adult too! I really hope Omar Khan can make a difference.

How is Jammy's view rubbish? You may not agree, but it doesn't make his view rubbish.

In the 80s and 90s, there was still quite a bit of racial abuse directed at players. How do you know that some Asian families decided they didn't want their children going to football to hear that kind of language? Yes, that kind of behaviour has thankfully stopped (especially at City games), but those same Asian familes may not know the improvements that have been made off the pitch to erridicate this. Only the Asian familes themselves will know for certain why their communities do not attend.

If someone 'believes' a reason could be for x,y or z, who are you tell time him he is talking rubbish?

Or were you thinking of the club sponsored by skips, just living off past memories. Third rate club for third rate fans. Hardly 'great'.

Prisoner Cell Block A, bradford says...
12:27pm Thu 8 Jan 09

There has always been a big interest in football from the Asian community in ENGLAND. We as a club have attempted many a time to tap into this market and failed. This has been for varying reasons, the main one being that 'elders' from the Asian community do not class this sport as a proper job and want their children eductaing, no harm in that, therefore even if a lad shows promise, as many do, they are not allowed to follow their dream due to family pressure usually. There was a lad at school with me who could pick the ball up from our keeper, beat all other 21 players on the pitch twice, walk round the keeper and backheel the ball into the net, he had to stop playing for the school team on a saturday morning as he had to work in the family shop. there was no ggive and take, he couldn't play for us anymore. I don't think the problem is with 2nd/3rd/4th generation as they are ready to 'play ball' it is with the whole idea surrounding sport as a job.

If this initiative is to succeed it is going to take more than one middle-aged Asian ambassador, the scouts, coaches, turnstile ops, programme sellers should be a blended mix of black/white/pink/bro
wn and yellow and nobody should feel as though they don't belong.

Hi as a bradfordian and yorkshireman that I am I follow City whenever I can - I have also returned to steward activities at BCFC and can say its been a pleasure to be back. I have also noticed a few asian faces in the stands and also have taken my daughter to see city- My son who is 2 at the moment will also be coming to watch. I do hope we can get more supporters in from all backgrounds but there is nothing wrong with a targetted approach.
Couple of pointers if i may
1. there must be intgration- not segregation i.e no seperate asian stand.
2. Language/abuse - as City has a family stand those who are going to be offended need to sit in the family stand but be warned that
- The F- word does seem to automatically come out of any Fans mouth or other such words the referee is a W????? or the urrrrrrrrrrrrrr you fat Bas?????? aHHHHHHHH you cannot stop these so people should not be offended on hearing this. Please correct me here if im wrong
3. Food/drink some form of asian food stuffs to be made avilable - Im sure Mr Khan can sub some of his starters to BCFC for sale during half time??
4. My son who I want to enjoy playing football, could be the next McCall or Windass- BCFC should have a scheme in place to capture hidden asian talent.

Lets get away from any bias here as im sure al lwe want to achive is to have more people in supporting city - and there is no stronger voice then all of us singing CITY TILL I DIE!!

Thank you

I've been a City fan all my life and since the 90’s I’ve always seen Asian supporters at Valley Parade and even occasionally at away grounds. There's a 'Sikh' gentlemen who sits near me in the Ciba Stand and he's been supporting the club for many years without any trouble. The doors to ‘Valley Parade’ have always been open we just need more people to come through the gates regardless of race, colour or religion..

Agree mate we are only a division above you and not a great team but over the last 30yrs i have had the pleasure of watching Leeds play all over Europe including the european cup final in paris something you will never have the pleasure of witnessing,I now look foreward to saturdays home game with probably 25,000+ third rate fans as you put it something else you can only dream of even with your cheap season tickets, be intersting to see how many you would get paying the prices uncle Ken makes us pay.at least i know (although it will take time)that one day Leeds will be big again unlike Bradford.

Didn't know there was a 'great team' in Beeston. Hunslet Hawks? Or were you thinking of the club sponsored by skips, just living off past memories. Third rate club for third rate fans. Hardly 'great'.

As I said, "living off past memories". When will you next be in Europe? Sorry, the pre-season trip to Ireland or perhaps playing League 2 teams in Norway. In relation to 'honours', I see the word 'runners-up' appears quite a few times. Hardly an honour! UEFA Champions League Runners-up 2001, but where are you now!!!! One league above City. GLORIOUS mate, GLORIOUS!
What was that again? I was still mesmerised by your history. No, that's not right. I was still laughing at you having to tip your weeks wages to Mr Bates to watch 3rd rate football. Now I'm starting to feel sorry for you.

"i have had the pleasure of watching Leeds play all over Europe including the european cup final in paris something you will never have the pleasure of witnessing". Why would I want to watch Leeds play all over Europe? If I am going to watch a team in Europe I would rather go on our tour to Ireland than yours. That's the only way you will be watching European games in the future.

Bubble has burst and Bates is holding the pin!

Thats the difference between Leeds and Bradford fans mate, i will pay top dollar to watch my team because i,m a fan unlike your lot who as soon as the ticket prices go back up will see your crowds plummet, see your main sponsor has pulled out next year as well be nice seeing how you cope with another administration and -15 points.

Is that so? Where are all your loyal fans then? I remember a few years back, you were getting gates close to 40k, now you only just half that figure. That is unless you have a BIG GAME, against one of the TOP 4. (Yeah that's right, it's Leicester, MK Dons, Millwall & Peterborough now isn't it? How the mighty have fallen)!

You will find that I have paid for a season ticket every year since I started earning a crust. As for not getting opportunity of seeing my team in European competition, I saw 2 games away in the qualifying competition a few years back (2000/01). Admittedly, it wasn't Champions League, but it was European competition.

As for the Main Sponsor pulling out, we have already been paid for this season, so no real shakes. It was expected, so we move on and agree a new deal elsewhere.

Just goes to show you doesn't it? You were getting BIG sponsors a few years back, such as Burton, Top Man, Thistle Hotels, Packard Bell & even strongbow. Now you have to settle for a third rate newspaper (YEP) where their target audience would actually rather read the T&A website!!!!

Freespeech,My beliefs come from standing in the paddock in the 70s,early 80s watching the stones rain down on the divided kop , and the anger vented on the local residents if city lost ,so whilst times may have changed at V.P,The locals proberbly still remember the behaviour of a few fans of that era.And as such are loath to let their kin attend games today.

This is why the average semi in Leeds is 40-50K more than Bfd of course prices are going to go up as people in Leeds can no longer afford the prices. It still puts house prices in bfd light years behind.
Can understand wanting to get away from grid city but to look forward to coming home to Bradford you must have one good sex life at home

You really are a freak, aren't you 'oddshapedballs'. You live in Bradford yourself, but spend all your time slagging off our City and our football club. You loser!

If you don't like football, stop reading the stories. Or is it because you don't get any attention at home.

Bitty for Loser (Sorry, I meant oddshapedballs OR i8soccer)
