Bradford Shotokan Academy took the 32nd North Eastern Open Karate competition by storm in Sunderland.

Six youngsters from the club won nine trophies bet-ween them.

Courtney Rivers-Gallagher was third in the nine years and under peewee kata and kumite events, Farris Bhatti was third in the 11-12 years mixed kumite, and Bradford won gold and silver in the 12 years and under team kumite after both teams made it to the final.

Bradford Shotokan A (Courtney Rivers-Gallagher, nine, Jack Nicholas, 12, and Danniell Manning, 12), beat Bradford Shotokan B (Leanne Dobson, eight, Farris Bhatti, 12, and Emeley O’Brien, ten) by just one point.

The club trains three times a week at Richard Dunn Sports Centre under seventh Dan instructor Fred Fawcett.

Sessions are on Tuesdays (7pm-8.30pm), Sundays (11am-12.30pm) and Fridays (7pm-8pm).

Meanwhile, students from Leeds Premier Karate Club, which has a training base at Yeadon, came away with 17 kata and kumite trophies at United Kingdom All Styles Karate Organisation’s (UKASKO) Midland Open competition in Birmingham.

The club’s squad of 22 competitors were up against clubs from all over England and achieved five first places – John Dagless (kumite), Joe Ryan (kumite), Dave Gill (kata), Donella Cook (kumite) and Richard Birch (kumite).

To cap a great competition, the club were also awarded the trophy for best club of the day.

The club train at Yeadon Westfield Junior School on Mondays and Wednesdays, with the beginners’ class from 5.45pm-6.30pm.

There are also club branches at Halton, Chapel Allerton and Garforth.
