Gold-winners are pride of Yorkshire

Two Bradford area Olympians picked up honours at the Yorkshire Sports awards for 2008 tonight at the Cedar Court Hotel.

Rowing gold medallist Andrew Hodge from Hebden, near Skipton, was named Senior Male of the Year at the black-tie bash in the city.

And Bradford made it a double when Paralympic archer Danielle Brown picked up the equivalent award for women.

Hodge was part of the coxless men’s four that won in such thrilling fashion in Beijing, while Lothersdale’s 20-year-old Brown won the women’s open individual compound event.

Horsforth cyclist David Stone won the Athlete with Disabilities category after taking two Paralympic golds – in the mixed individual time trial and mixed individual road race.

Leeds Rhinos were named Team of the Year, Brian McClennan also picking up the Coach of the Year award following his side’s Super League triumph.

Olympic gold medal-winning sailor Paul Goodison from Rotherham won the main award as BBC Yorkshire Sports Personality of the Year. The four-time European champion won the laser class in Beijing after coming fourth in Athens back in 2004.
