Steve McNamara faces a difficult call as to whether to risk Sam Burgess in tomorrow's engage Super League home match against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The 19-year-old prop went for his second scan of the week on an injured shoulder yesterday lunch-time and said last night: “I don’t want to say too much but the result was better than expected.”

As to whether he would feature against the Wildcats, the world’s best teenager said: “That’s up to Steve”.

Given McNamara’s comments about Burgess earlier in the week, however, it would be a calculated risk to play him in what is a vital encounter with the sixth and last play-off place up for grabs.

The Bulls coach watched his team make what he called “schoolboy errors” in going down 32-28 at Warrington Wolves last Friday.

But now, as the race for the end-of-season berths intensify, McNamara is only too aware that his team need to perform to improve a run of six defeats in eight matches.

On the mistakes ledger, he said: “A lot of it is down to individuals. The errors that were made last weekend were because a lot of our backfield were throwing passes they shouldn’t have and dropping the ball while playing it.

“These are elementary mistakes and we need to get smarter in areas like concentration and understanding the scoreboard and the situation, which our players are smart enough to do. We are all aware if we cut those things out we should be okay for tomorrow.

“Sometimes the opposition force errors on you but the Michael Platt play-the-ball error last week was because he had been hit hard in a heavy tackle and wasn’t quite aware of where he was, but there are other errors in that game that we put on ourselves.

“On the other hand, we try to force errors from the opposition and hopefully they come up with some of the mistake we did.”

Wakefield have their Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull to look forward to a week tomorrow but McNamara reckons that could have a positive effect on the Wildcats.

He said: “It is quite possible they might come here tomorrow with one eye on the semi-final but probably more in relation to the fact that they will all want to play in that game and they will be keen to put in a good performance to make it impossible for them to be left out of the semi-final side.

“I know if I was a player in their position I would be putting my best foot forward to make sure I was in the side, so I am sure we will see the best of Wakefield.

“The game is tough enough and if you have one eye off it you will get hurt anyway. You have to focus on what’s before you or there won’t be a next week if it all goes wrong for you.

“I am sure they will be highly motivated because they have places to play for in the semi-final and the way the league table is at the moment, sixth spot is up for grabs, so it’s a big, big game for both sides.”

Meanwhile, Iestyn Harris has confessed to enjoying playing hooker, saying: “It’s been good. I have covered a few positions this year and I’ve enjoyed it.

“Things have gone pretty well, although the results could have been better. But our performances are improving and hopefully that will show in the results.

“I thought we did enough to win at Warrington but we made some crucial errors in some crucial parts of the field and you get burnt when you do that.”

Leave him out and get the shoulder right before he's crocked entirely.

On another note, last nights Wigan saints game completely ruined by Ashley Klein sending a playe roff for a tackle that had it been the other way around he would NOT have sent a saints player for. Two wigan tries ruled out for incredibly pernickety video ref rulings that could have been interpreted the other way just as easy. Rugby league needs to address this refereeing disparity in how teams are treated and soon. The credibility of the game is at stake.

Wakefield's season IS the Challenge Cup (as it was supposed to be the Bulls). Away at Odsal, semi-final next week, they are primed to be put to the sword and the Bulls must run up a cricket score. Interesting the comments from Iestyn. I think his best positions this year have been water-boy and guest commentator for Five Live.

Micksey, I agree with you entirely. The level, and consistency, of refereeing was woeful. The tackle was bad but was it intentional? It certainly didn't result in the player being removed from the game. Remember Cunningham's stiff-arm in the game before the semi-final, last year? Sending-off, sin bin, suspension? A paltry fine! Looks like the rules, decisions and results are directed from Knowlesley Road.

Same goes for Sol being sin-binned against wire for a nothing offence. Since Cummins took over the refereeing of games has slipped into farcical. Officials should be seen as completely impartial. They have it in their power to let a game flow. They also can manipulate a series of games to benefit certain teams. Seems they are up to the latter!.

Re Micksey, Wibsey's message. I thought the sending-off was entirely justified. I do agree with you regarding the video referee's unbelievable rulings on two Wigan "tries", but what REALLY gets my goat is the fact that the "powers that be" refuse to allow the match(and video)referee to look at forward passes in the build up to a try, yet will spend a minute or so looking at whether or not the Wigan player "pushed" the Saints player. The whole ethos of our great game is being spoiled by this refusal to ensure that passes are made in accordance with the laws of the game (i.e. NOT forward).

As regards the Burgess issue. Macca has us all scratching our heads. From being out for the season and missing out on the England tour, he is now on tomorrows team sheet and Macca says he's "in a dilemma" For goodness sake, there is no way he should play until there is no doubt re his fitness. LEAVE HIM OUT!

Guys how about a petition to Red Hall that this issue be taken seriously? I think the video refs are getting way too pernickety too, witness Kopczak's try last week, ruled for a minimal crossing way back in the move after which moment Warrington had about 5 opportunities to make the tackle and didn't.

Whereas a blatant crossing was simply overlooked directly in the lead up to Talau's try in the saints wire cup match earlier in the season, one which directly allowed Talau to corss unhindered and changed the course of the game. The point is that these incidents of woeful refereeing invariably come down on the side of either Saints or Leeds when they are playing and there are now far too many of them for it to be coincidence.

Having watched the Stains v Wigan game last night , yet again , I am NOT surprised at the match officials decisions , I say officials & not referees , as there is the ongoing question of Red Hall making sure their 2 FAVOURITE TEAMS WIN (at all costs , even to the extent of biased match officials . We have seen this happen time & time again over the recent 4 or 5 seasons ; with the result eventually being that the Whinos will play the Stains 20 times each season , as no other Club will be evident , as they will have , by then , be fed up of playing against 16 opponents each & every week !!!!!

Hi Micksey, (see I got the name right!!)Have you any suggestions as to how we could petition Red Hall. Do they have provision on a web site or anything? It is all getting way beyond a joke. Koppys 'Try' was a really good one. I think what proves the case against the ref's is that the video ref has time to look at an incident and very often when everyone sees it one way, he sees it diferently. This should only be able to occurr very rarely yet seems to be the norm.

I shall look into forthwith haitch and see what provision they have for the ordinary downtrodden rugby supporters to pierce the self congratulatory cocoon of cruel indifference they inhabit.

I will be the first to put my name to anything you may uncover micksey but I get the feeling your mention of "cocoon" is more pertinent than you might imagine, where Red Hall are concerned

If Sam Burgess is fit to play then he should play, if he's 50/50, then the call should be left entirley to him.

PS, The red card was completley correct, Mike Mcilorum coacked his arm and swang it at his head.

Micksey - let me know about your proposed petition - i'll support it as long as it's well put together. With Cummings in charge however, it'll probably go in the bin - remember him blaming Deacon for "pretending" to tackle Chris Joynt(king of the surfers) when he went to ground without a tackle in the last seconds of a play-off final.
