Everton defender on trial with Bantams

City are casting an eye over teenage defender Shaun Densmore.

The 19-year-old right back, who has been released by Everton, is currently on trial for pre-season.

Densmore was named 2006-07 academy player of the year at Goodison, which earned him a senior deal for one season.

But despite playing regularly in Everton’s reserves, he was unable to break into the first-team squad and was one of a dozen players let go by David Moyes in May.

Densmore had a trial game with Preston’s reserves in April and is now looking to earn a chance with former Toffee Stuart McCall at Valley Parade.

McCall said: “We saw he was available and asked his agent if Shaun wanted to join us for pre-season so we could have a look at him.

“Obviously we’re only training at the moment but we’ll have him here for a couple of weeks and see what we think.”

Paul Arnison will be McCall’s first-choice full back on the right but he is short of an understudy.

McCall employed three different players in the role last season – Darren Williams, Ben Starosta and Tom Harban.

Starosta, who has another year on his contract at Sheffield United, has been linked with a return.

City’s recent record with former Everton youngsters is mixed. Steve Schumacher became a mainstay in Colin Todd’s midfield but Scott Phelan struggled to make an impact after he arrived from Merseyside a year ago.

Meanwhile, long-time City target Darren Moore has joined Barnsley.

Moore signed a two-year deal at Oakwell after the Tykes beat off competition from Leicester.

Barnsley boss Simon Davey said: “We have been looking to increase competition at the back and have brought in a player with a proven pedigree.

“Darren has won promotion four times from the Championship during his career. We are delighted to have persuaded him to join up despite interest from a lot of other clubs.”

City have arranged a friendly at Farsley Celtic on Wednesday, July 16. The pre-season opener replaces the original fixture against Harrogate Town.

Whereas I have the greatest of respect for David Moyes at Everton, I hope he has got this players assessment wrong. Managers do get it wrong, and young players develop and blossom with other Clubs.

Shaun Densmore has previously shown great promise, I hope he continues to impress,& obtains a contract with City.

Good luck to the lad. I think this will be way forward with signings once we have a striker & experienced keeper signed up. Macca will bring in a few younger lads, either released from Premiership or Championship clubs, or on loan, to bolster the squad. Competition will be healthy and we will have a good blend of youth & experience.

We all remember Danny, at least if he gets in the squad it will bring the average age below 30. Good luck to the young lad and lets hope it is a step to a better career.

Average age of the squad at present is 25.74, so MrKnownowt, what are you basing your comments on again? No research, inability to provide facts to back up arguments, and given that you have alluded to being some sort of whiz with figures I thought that that point would have been extremely easy for you not to trip up over. Poor education levels and very poor knowledge all round, not making you look like the avenging hero you thought eh? Back to the old folks bins boy.

Miss 'SENSE-LESS' from BINGLEY, should get together with Master 'SHAUN' from RICHMOND. I just wonder what kind of child they may produce; and what would it be called?. It would be ugly, and full of excreta, and I don't think their disposable nappies could cope with three loads of No.2!!

Well pointed out DHA - we have a squad of 20 at present, and only 6 of those are 30+. Granted, we might end up with another couple when we nail down another keeper and striker, but that will be offset with the trialists & loan players which we'll be bringing in to bolster the squad. I just hope that any loans are for a full season this time rather than 3 or 6 months - much more beneficial to the club and the player.

What most people are waiting for is the signing of a player who they have heard of. It is worrying that we have still not signed anyone who had to be paid a fee for.

I would suggest that a good keeper is essential to a steady confident offence and that the club should look to bring in someone that is worth a decent transfer fee.

The problem for the fans is that the club's finances are always shrouded in mystery.

And whatever happened to the couple of season long loans which were going to be brought in? If they were going to happen you would expect them to be training with the lads now.

And therein lies the problem, if most City fans haven't heard of Graeme Lee or Paul McLaren then they have their heads in the clouds. Both very good solid players at this level AND above. Not internationals or premeirship stars, but both very well known names in lower league football and both good competitors. We can't complain about the age of our squad being old, yet want to sign 'known' players, the only way this can happen is if they are on their way out of the game, a la Chris Waddle. Keep the faith I say, the signings so far are just what was needed, a keeper and another striker to come and we will be just about settled. Besides there is always bound to be one or two more that come either on trial like the kid above, or complete surprises that nobody was even aware was even in the pipeline.

I agree totally with your post. I would have also added the names of Brandon and Arnison. Two quality players who have been very good players at this level and the one above.

McCall know what he is doing and I back him 100%. Should the players not perform then they only have themselves to blame. However, I am not stupid enough to think McCall would be given the blame. These are quality signings and genuine City fans should be optimistic to say the least.

On another point, McCall was looking for a new striker before Medley left. Is he now looking to bring in two new players? If so, we could yet see Beckett/Boulding and another.

DonHutchinsAfro, bradford says...

I really think that the Beckett deal is still being kicked about, Boulding will go elsewhere.

Are Freddy and donHutchins a pair or just 'very good friends'. I predict City will finish out of the play offs but in the top half of the league (Fourth Division). Trying to think of a con for year after season ticket sales to make the books for this season balance.

Stuarts signings, of a couple of over the hill has beens, doesnt exactly make for a promotion push this season!!!! but even "HE" must have something up his sleeve, to give the City faithfull SOME hope!!!

DonHutchinsAfro, bradford says...
5:59pm Fri 4 Jul 08

Agreed Waynus, but I didn't think it worth mentioning Arnison if neither McLaren or Lee are known by some, and Brandon should be known by all. Still itching to find out who the keeper will be, I thought the Evans rumour would have been talked about by now. And as mentioned before, if Burch has gone to Lincoln then Marriot won't want to play second fiddle there so maybe we will go in for him. If he is on a free obviously Mr Knownowt.

Bantam-in-Greece, says...
7:01pm Fri 4 Jul 08

Do we really want Alan Marriot when he wasn't even wanted at Lincoln? Why don't they want him now must be the first question.
I would have very serious doubts about signing this 'keeper.

EMB Bantam, Guiseley says...
7:07pm Fri 4 Jul 08

Negative from Richmond - what makes them 'over the hill has-beens'?

Lee is only 30 and was Donnie's captain. He might not be Championship quality but he'll certainly do a job for a us over the next 2-3 years. McClaren is 31 and will excel at this level. Tranmere were desperate to hang onto him and their fans are gutted that he's gone.

We might be on an even keel financially, but we still don't have the cash to be paying out for some 20-something wonderkid. These guys are excellent free signings, and are certainly better than this level, as will be proved this season.

Seriously, why do you and your negative cronies even bother turning up at VP if life down there is so bad? At least Miss Sensible doesn't hide the fact that she's not a City fan - just a psyche ward patient with a laptop - whereas you actually claim to be a Bantam, which is far more worrying.

What I find incredible is that supporters are talking about McClaren, Lee and Arnison as though they are household names. From some of the comments made,it's as though they've watched them regularly, which they obviouslt haven't.

They may be OK but I've never heard of them, so lets have some realism in these posts.

Pablo, if you have an interest in lower league football, and as a City fan you should, then they are household names. The optimism comes from the fact that these lads are amongst the best in the lower leagues and are a great capture for us. The realism has to ocme from us fans, we are 4t hdivision and as such won't be attracting the names you see on match of the day. Try getting out more.

Oh, DonH, if only I had but 10% of your knowledge of journeymen plying their trade in the lower leagues!

Have you actually seen these new signings play or is your opinion based on the "Who's who of the Lower Divisions"?

Pablo, yes I have, and as a fan of a team which will be filled with lower league journeymen for the next few seasons I would advise you to be more aware too, then you will know whether we are signing the best of the worst or the worst of the best. I still don't understand why so many City fans don't take an interest in the divisions we are in, or hope to rise into. Not much point reading the daily rags as they only contain the info regarding Prem clubs, we are 4th division, we will attract only lower league players.
