Tuned-in Wayne Godwin knows all about the secrets to Hull KR’s Michael Dobson’s game – on and off the field.

The pair were housemates as well as team-mates in their time together at Wigan, so the Bulls hooker is in the know about the Aussie playmaker ahead of their clash this weekend.

“Dobbo lived with me in Wigan and we’re good friends,” said Godwin.

“I had to look after him a bit back then! I’m a bit older and he was only a young kid over from Oz, so I took him under my wing. We had a good craic and he’s a great bloke.

“I’m pleased to see he’s got a proper contract over here now as he’s been at Catalans short-term and the same at Wigan. But he’s signed a longer deal at Hull KR and it’ll be good to come up against him.”

Wily scrum half Dobson became a local star during his three-month spell with Wigan, the 19-year-old rookie’s arrival helping see a big upturn in fortunes that saw them stave off a shock relegation in 2006.

He had originally come to prominence earlier that season, arriving on loan from Canberra Raiders to play ten games for Catalans Dragons while Kiwi legend Stacey Jones was injured.

Dobson, now 22, returned to Sydney but, after struggling for opportunities in the NRL, agreed a permanent switch back to Super League with Rovers, signing a two-and-a-half year contract last month.

The scheming No 7 is sure to be a key figure on Sunday, having scored twice in four games so far and adding plenty to Rovers’ attacking game.

Godwin, fit again after missing five games due to a hernia operation, admitted: “We know the danger he possesses.

“Hull KR have got two good halves, with Paul Cooke alongside him as well. They’ve a good kicking game, a strong forward pack and some quality.

“But we’re trying to get on a roll now after the lads beat Hull last week. There’s definitely stuff still to work on but there’s a bit of confidence back and we’re looking forward to this contest.

“Hopefully I’ll get a game too but we’ll have to see.”
