City can learn a lot from van Bronckhorst

Stuart McCall says watching Euro 2008 has reinforced his belief that fitness is more paramount than ever in modern-day football.

The City boss reckons his players need look no further than Dutch star Giovanni van Bronckhorst for inspiration ahead of their return to pre-season training.

"The Holland v Italy match was the one game I definitely wanted to watch during the tournament and I really enjoyed it," he said.

"But the main aspect it pressed on me was just how important fitness levels really are. Van Bronckhorst cleared off his own line one second and then the next was in the opposition box setting up a goal.

"It was an amazing passage but it's no surprise looking at the top sides that they seem to be fitter both physically and mentally and that's why they are where they are.

"The energy of the Dutch was wonderful and that's what we want out of our players.

"People may say we've got people like Joe Colbeck and Omar Daley who can break away like that but they need to be able to do it in the last ten minutes as well as the first. Van Brockenhurst just kept going.

"Stats show it's the five minutes prior to half-time and ten minutes before the end that most goals are scored and, interestingly, the same goes for injuries being suffered. It all points towards fitness.

"It's something I've been discussing with Steve Bollen, from Yorkshire Clinic, who might be involved with us in some new things next season."

twice a week at Northcliffe up and down those hills followed by cold showers will get them fit if nothing else.

I said it throughout last season we conceded too mnay goals prior to half time, just after half time and at the end of the game.

Without checking detail I would hazard a guess that had we not conceded goals in that last 10 minutes of games we would have been promoted automatically or have been thereabouts.

What was enlightening about the Dutch goal of the season was not only a similarity with one scored by Bergkampf for Holland in a world cup a few years ago but the fact that from the break out they has three players attacking within seconds.

Another team to watch is PORTUGAL: when defending corners they leave three maybe four players up the field: that means the attacking team have to defend and there are less bodies in the penalty area making it easier for keepers to do their job.

be innovative with fit players and invariably you will win more than you lose.

any time to concede a goal is a bad time:I was merely following on what SM said.

Funny though I seem to remember DW banging on about fitness levels and getting a Clinic/University involved and nothing much happened. Then SM hit the same theme several times last season and even singled out players who were not as fit as they should be etc etc.

So what has changed:SM is still consulting. What does he want a Green Paper, a White Paper and then loads of discussions and a vote.

All sportsmen who are not physically up to the job lose concentration quicker: loss of concentration results in mistakes and silly mistakes which cost goals which costs points!.

So physical toughness gained not just on a week end jolly with the Army but over a long sustained periopd of time leads to better concentration.

Come on SM stop the " we will be discussing bit" get on with it: take a wander through Northcliffe at leisure:just the walk can do us less mortals in so imagine regular running up and down those slopes. Your popularity withe teh players will go down but are you bothered when your job will be on the line.

However change the policy from that which applied in the 60s and 70s when City trained at Northcliffe:take the players away from these training sessions otherwise the Branch will see massively increased takings!!

For me it's Germany or Spain. Holland have always flattered to deceive and I can see them failing again in the latter stages. Spain are another side that always do worse than they should, but I just have an inkling they will be there or there abouts.

As for Germany, they have the easier draw and can coast to the final. Will they be beat there? I doubt it.

Instead of McCall watching the Euro's, he should be on the blower to players and their agents he has already spoken to and firmed up his offers. We need another top signing this week and I would be telling the players to sign or go elsewhere. Either they want to sign for us or they don't. It has been almost four weeks since the last meeting between McCall and an agent. I appreciate players (and McCall) have been away on holiday, but not for four weeks.

Time for action Stuart. Get them signed up before this weekend's ticket deadline or move onto your next targets.

Well, the Holland v Italy match was on at quarter to 8 at night.. not sure Stuart spending 2 hours of his evening watching a football match will make any difference to our chances of getting new players in to be honest, Waynus.

Although that Van Bronkhurst fella looked handy.. we could do with a replacement for Heck!

I'm finding it difficult to choose a winner at the moment, I've had my head in the sand about the tournament due to sulking so have missed all of the build up but since it has been on, the football has been great (apart from the France match.. like the commentator said, just like watching England in the first game of a major tournament!)and I'm now happy just to be watching the football.. and without the crushed dreams an England entry would bring!

I'd say Portugal, Holland and Spain have impressed the most so far, though I feel it may be a bit of a false dawn for Spain, and from previous tournaments you can only write Italy off at your peril!

The German squad may not be teenagers but they are still quite young. One of you're examples of their aging squad Podolski, he about 23 I think?

This is actually the same with a lot of their other major stars, Lahm and Schweinsteiger are both about this age. Only two of their current squad will be too old for the world cup Lehmann and Neuville. So I have to think Mr.T has a point. (Sorry if i spelt Schweinsteiger wrong lol not the easiest.)

Your right, some are very old, but not all and i thought podolski was 23 or 24. I want holland to win it as i think theyve produced the best football so far

One would of thought it was obvious that fitness levels are important, the way some of ours players ran or staggered around last seasons speaks for itself.
As for season tickets, I notice today that the figure is around 6.500 whsich i would say is about right considering the drivel that City served up last season especially at home.Surely from a PR point if the club had signed a few of these great signings which we kekep hearing about far more tickets would have been sold.

Get them signed up before this weekend's ticket deadline or move onto your next targets.
so stuart is banned from watching the Euro's by Waynus, is he at least allowed a toilet break?
I haven't banned him, but I do think he should have been picking up the phone and getting his 'targets' to put up or shut up. I know that Rotherham will sign Boulding this week. We have had plenty of time to sign Beckett, but that has gone quiet too.

We are still harbouring hope (the club that is, not the fans) that we get 9,000 adults signed up for the ticket offer. However, we don;t seem to be making any noises regarding signings. If they want the 'floaters' (and I don't mean Sensible, oxford etc) to part with their money at this late stage, they need to pull out a couple of exciting signings. Watching Euro 2008 isn't going to do that.

As for toilet breaks, he has just had a fortnight on holiday. He had time for the loo then, LOL.

I wonder if Barry Conlon has been watching Van Bronkhorst. That would be the equivalent of Giant Haystack (RIP)watching Frankie Dettori. The off season headlines and stories are becoming more comic by the day. Keep it up, you couldn't make it up.No signings worth a candle and we are favourites to go up. Do me a favour.

Lets get this straight. No signings of note, names targets going elsewhere and BCFC expect supporters to buy season tickets. Any business knows customers need to be given incentives (if the product isn't good enough - ala last seasons home form). Come on city give us something to get excited about. No more old players - lets get some of the good kids from BSP - energise the City.

So Boulding will be going to Rotheram they have done well if they complete that signing. They are obviously short of funds and haven't got great prospects especially as he could of gone higher or to a team like us who will be going higher! If this is true though let's get Beckett signed up as he is probably the best other option available!

WHAT PLAYERS??!! i'm sorry but you are talking complete rubbish. no one sorts thier summer signings out on June 11 and there is no need to panic that we still have players to sign,. barely any clubs have signed players yet, certainly not sorted the full squad out.

sorry but I stand by my statement that you're stupid. have you only just started supporting city? i;ve followed them for many years and have never known all the players to be signed up at this stage in the summer, and never been worried about it either

Get them signed up before this weekend's ticket deadline or move onto your next targets.
so stuart is banned from watching the Euro's by Waynus, is he at least allowed a toilet break?
He had time for the loo then, LOL.
spot on m8 no signings and were missing potential signings like hot cakes no wonder people arnt buying the season tickets at this rate we woulnt have a team to field on the opening day of the season how pathetic city c,mon pull your fingers out at get them signed before sunday so we can meet them at the open day. any comments
what are you talking about? what signings are we missing like 'hot cakes'? if everyone else was busy snapping up players I could understand idiots like you been concerned, but no one is (unless you think we should have signed Jamie Forrester). stuart mccall doesn't need to make the signings for sunday, he needs to sign the right players when deals can be agreed, ideally all of them by the big kick off. there are two months until the season starts so calm down and stop been so bloody stupid
how dare you call me stupid.. take yoour head out your **** all the players we could do with are now set to go elswere because as usual city are too slow out of the blocks read the above posts...

iv been suporting city 25 years, and im not saying they should sign them all now im saying get them while we can he knows who he wants so why the wait?? he has to bring in at least 5 or 6 new players and you say theres 8 weeks to the new season how do you expect them to bond and gel in that amount of time not possible, so if sm is trueto his word and says he knows what he wants and he knows what hes doing then sm should be fireing on all cylinders and should of at least bagged two or three, the likes of brandon who hes got, forrester who hes intrested in, and also theres beckett so now you see why we wonder what the hell is going on, and this is proberbly the thoughts of the so called 3000 fans who still have not bought there season tickets because there waighting to see who we get.

Apparently, he retired from football a few yars back and Rotherham gave him the chance to get back into the game. As such, he favours a move back to them. His words, not mine.

With regard to the -10 points, they are set to put their CVA to their creditors this week, so it is not anticipated they will start with minus points.

Here is another point to consider. A player can negotiate a new contract with a different club after January 1. As such, City can 'sign' any player from 1 January. However, their existing clubs will still pick up their wage bill until 1 July (as most contracts end 30 June).

Why can't we complete the signings of our targets now and get their clubs to pick up the tab. At least we will know which players have agreed and the fans that are still sitting on the fence will know which players they may 'miss' out on watching next season if they don't renew.

Thoughts??
