City defend ticket offer

Halifax fans have been told to "stop being paranoid" over City's cut-price ticket offer.

Joint-chairman Mark Lawn insisted there was no ulterior motive behind the scheme to encourage supporters of the crisis-hit Shay club to buy a season-ticket for Valley Parade.

As a club who, in the not too distant past, have suffered extreme financial difficulties themselves, their aim of targeting those who support Halifax Town for their own gain is mischievous to say the least

Allan Baker

Halifax-based businessman and City associate director Glenn Ackroyd has offered to pay £51 towards the £150 cost, providing the fans prove they live in Calderdale.

But it has been slammed as "disgusting" by the Halifax Town supporters' trust, one of two parties who have put forward plans to keep the Shaymen in existence.

Trust chairman Allan Baker said: "Football in Halifax has not ceased to exist so it is hugely disappointing that our neighbours at Bradford City are looking to gain from our current predicament.

"As a club who, in the not too distant past, have suffered extreme financial difficulties themselves, their aim of targeting those who support Halifax Town for their own gain is mischievous to say the least."

But Lawn maintains that the concerns are unfounded. "They've taken the idea out of context," he added. "We're not trying to pinch Halifax Town fans but to build bridges - we're just asking if they want to come and support us as their second club.

"I don't think there's any animosity between Halifax Town and Bradford City. Nobody is forcing them to do it so I don't understand the problem.

"Glenn has friends and family who are Halifax fans and they said they'd like to come here as well. That's where the idea came from. To suggest that we're trying to turn people away from supporting Halifax is just getting the wrong end of the stick."

Meanwhile, Lawn is happy with the response from City's "ring-round" to former season-ticket holders who are yet to buy a new one.

He said: "I would reckon around 65 to 70 per cent of people we've spoken to are now going to renew.

"It's not a high-pressure selling technique but a customer-care exercise and I think that's been appreciated. We've been able to help people out with any queries or problems."

The half-price deadline for season-tickets is Sunday, June 15.

The ticket office is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10-4pm on Sundays.

I think Town have every right to be a little annoyed to be honest, with their future up in the air it isn't exactly tactful on City's behalf.

Imagine if Leeds had started making season ticket offers to our fans while we were in administration?

i think the cheap ticket scheme is getting to be a joke now the 150 pound to a ticket is fine but the bogof is were its takeing the **** loads of people are paying 75 pounds and expecting to get the free one. the club should of done a normal sale till 4 weeks before the season started and everything would be ok. 11 days left to sell 3000 adult tickets is imposible its just a big no no for me. and as for halifax town i dont want them supporting our club just like town and bellend rd stay away.. up the bamtams.

Ooops...! Looks like we've put our size 9s into the sloppy stuff again.Having read the quote from the Halifax Supporters Trust I can now understand how annoyed they must be. The whole club must be at a pretty low ebb with the prospect of going out of business (we know how bad that feels)& there's us rubbing salt in the wounds -Ouch! it's like Huddersfield Town fans inviting us to switch allegiance to them when we were on the brink.Football is all about loyalty so the idea that you would consider switching clubs when things get tough is a bit of a fantasy. It's all turned into a bit of a public relations disaster - Crash,Bang,Wallop!

This is a business decision and a good one. Yes, we'd be annoyed if Huddersfield, Leeds or even Halifax had done it to us when we were in administration, but there are plenty of football fans in Halifax who may want to watch another club next season. What would City fans rather the club do? Let Huddersfield take them or try and offer them an incentive to come to Bradford?

i know quite a few halifax fans from when i lived in queensbury and having spoken to a few of them in the past week or so all but one of them said they would watch city if halifax failed to survive so maybe the deal should have come about if the worst happens to them and then there would be no ill feeling between clubs but personally i hope the shaymen do survive and wish them all the best.
as for our own season tickets i think you will find quite a few of these fans who havent renewed there tickets yet will be doing so on the open day watch for a last minute surge but weather or not we reach our 9000 target remains to be seen if seems a tough order

Still think some fans are hoping to do a deal with a mate i.e. I will buy one you give me £75 and when the free one comes in we will get in for half the price of the others. Sad fact, but true. I understand that NotSo or Senseless is going to be the first in line to buy one for £300 to prove a point of so called principle. Given all the garbage he has posted before about the deal I guess it must do the honourable thing (sic) and prove a noble point by paying the full whack!!

I dont get what the problem is.

If Besston Utd sold their season tickets for less than ours - regardless of our financial situation, it wouldn't convince me to get a season ticket with them and not City, nor with any other team - it defies the logic of me being a City fan. If it was affordable enough for me to have both sets of tickets and I wanted to go either team at times, then this would be ideal.

A town fan is not suddenly going to become a City fan because of this.

Some City fans are just been tight ar** hol*s, trying to get things even cheaper than £150 is takin the preverbial! They don't want to pay the full price but expect the world out of the team! If we reach the 9000 figure needed, my free ticket will be going to Martin House Childrens Hospice, for one of the great kids out there to use! No-one who isn't willing to pay full price, unless they are unable to afford it financially, should go to Park Avenue and enjoy the lower standards of football they play there! If they want to pay a smaller amount watch a lesser team! C.T.I.D

What a wonderful and commendable gesture, from 'Bradford Sunwin', to donate his potential FREE Season Ticket, to someone who is disadvantaged.

There must be a great number of 'City' Supporters, who may not be in a position to buy a £150. Season Ticket.
To date(06-06-08) 6007 tickets have been sold, with 9 days to go, to the June 15 Deadline.

If the 'TARGET' is achieved, I would like to donate my 'Free' Season Ticket to a deserving 'City' Supporter, or Potential Supporter, who may not be in a position to pay £150.

Perhaps our fans could suggest deserving causes/people, that would welcome the donation?

Don't lets get away from the true point by involving disadvantaged people. There are numerous ways to give to charity without using them to defend the actions of the city management. My whole complaint from day one is the way that management has gone about the season ticket offer with blinkers on. These schemes do not work and I just cannot understand why they went down this line tt obtain much needed finance. All I would have wanted was a fair price for one ticket. No I will not be buying any season tickets this year because of the offer and will pick and choose any matches I might wish to attend. Last season I could not give any tickets away for a large number of games. The latest action in respect of Halifaxers I feel only goes to show what they will get up to off the field so I do not what can be expected on the field - we can all promise.

Mr Sensible - these schemes do work but possibly only in the short term. City sold 12,000 tickets last season on the back of the return of McCall & at the last count HTFC has sold 14,000 in there first season of trying it. The reason City are not selling more this time around is down to the disappointment of last seasons miserable home form & the euphoria of McCall being back having worn off.Football is like politics, everyone votes for you when things are rosy but when things go wrong apathy creeps in & people drift away. How many seson tickets do you think City would have sold under the current scheme if they had been promoted via Wembley?

Town tickets now approaching 17,000. A better income at £100 each than 6,000 at £150 or even 9,000 or 18,000 at £150/£75. City would have sold none under the schem had they gained promotion via Wembley, or at least they should not have as it should not have been implimented. How many would have returned week after week last season had they not had season tickets. I admire people coming into clubs but they have to treat fans with a lot of common SENSE and cannot go on like this for ever. You have to look ahead and if no promotion this season what for the year after, a guest player picked from the crowd. Sorry I think the promotions used get worse and worse and only go to put off a lot of true fans. All it wanted at the start was like last season a good priced ticket with no strings attached as a lot of fans will be very disapointed if they do not get an extra ticket as they will have bought half the number in anticipation irrespective of what they preach, it's human nature and should have been realised before launching the offer.

Town tickets now approaching 17,000. A better income at £100 each than 6,000 at £150 or even 9,000 or 18,000 at £150/£75. Huh??

So £150 is NOT a sensible price for a ticket?

Which planet are you on?

If the only strings to it are that I get a FREE one if 8,999 other buy one- then BRING IT ON!

What on earth am I losing by buying one?

I am going anyway- so wat's the difference?

Unlike you Sensible I am a TRUE supporter of the club- thick or thin times.

You are just too fickle.

Don't bother going next year mate.

Save your pennies and do something else on a Saturday afternoon like sit in the nice new pedestrian area by the Arts centre and chat with the old ladies about the weather and flowers etc.

You are getting a good priced season ticket it's only 12 pounds more than last season with a much more promising side. Also had you bought it before January it would of been the same price! And oh no IF we get to 9000 tickets we might get a free one what ahorrible catch that is. If it's because you have no friends to take Senseless then you don't have to use it.

Please stop bleating Captain Sensible. All this hair tugging is doing your head no good.Rattling on for weeks about how City should go about their business.Telling us on a near daily basis that you won't be getting a season ticket.Has'nt it sunk in by now - nobody wants you at the club anyway - whether you have a £150 ticket, have a free ticket or pay on the gate. Just stay at home on a Saturday & watch an old movie on BBC2 instead. It's ok by us - we promise not to miss you too much. There'll be no tears. As for HTFC don't forget to e mail me again in 12 months time,& assuming they've not been promoted tell me how many season tickets they have sold 2nd time around once the novelty has worn off.

I love the ideaology behind our clubs season ticket offer - It has set the standard for all other clubs who care about their fans to follow suit. I have bought 2 season tickets already and i try always to be optimistic. However, as of 4/6 we were 3152 adult season tickets short of the magic 9000 with only 11 days left, that equates to 286.5 adults buying a season ticket every day until the offer ends. The update on the site today for the 5/6 was that we sold a total of 159 adult tickets. This falls short of the 286 we required per day. I don't need to tell everyone 'it ain't going to happen' as much as i would like it to, the numbers are just to vast. I do foresee some sort of extention to the offer, or a statement from the club sooner rather than later on just what will happen next. I personally think that the club will honour the 2 for 1 tickets to those who have purchased already, but with some sort of terms and conditions etc. I am really disappointed that not enough tickets have been sold and hope that by some miracle it will happen, but i won't hold my breath. Nevertheless, i will be there in August shouting the boys on, whether 15,000 in the crowd or 8,000 in the crowd because it's our club and we must support it through thick and thin. CTID

In fairness sensible has talked a lot of **** in the past, but the one he made above is pretty spot on. The buy one get one free offer, although a decent idea in principle wasnt thought out thoroughly enough. There seem to be too many people going for the "I'll buy one with my mate offer" .... it would have been better to price them in the £120 region and retain the fans from last year ( say 9000 * 120 = £1,080,000), than get 6000 * 150 = (£900,000)..... Its not rocket science.

I bought one last year even though I only made 6 games, but I cant justify that again this season.

It would be interesting to see who these " I will wait until my mate buys a ticket" people are- I work in a large office where there are lots of City fans and not one has said that.

So WHO are these imaginary people.

So far I see on here that people either cannot or will not buy a ticket.

No one in between.

Let's face it any true fan of the club would already have bought a ticket or will get one at discount before the 15th.

I actually got mine at £136 before xmas.

Rick, five lane ends. Look forward to you taking action against me. What a pathetic statement. One can have their own views and all should be taken into account. If the tickets had been £150 each with no offers fans would have bought them. Yes I fully expect ALL sold by 15th will get an extra ticket as the management has boxed themselves in. That a forecast and not a threat.I assume Rick's is a physical threat as such statements do not come from intelligent people.

I’ve read your view and tried to see what you’re getting at, but I’m drawing a blank. I don’t see how you can think there are strings attached. From day one the season ticket was promoted as £150 and if, and only if, 9,000 apply everyone will all get another one free. If it had been positioned as you will definitely get one free with some little asterisk next to it, and small print at the bottom hidden away saying “offer only valid if 9,000 apply” there would be a reason to gripe. If people are disappointed that’s life, but they can’t argue they were misled.

The club are offering you a free season ticket under certain circumstances, if you don’t like that you can always choose to just pay £150 and refuse the second ticket. I find it odd that you are so offended by a good offer and can only assume you walk around Morrisons with the same attitude of disgust when noticing an item you bought the previous week is now the subject of BOGOF at almost the same price. “No garden peas for Mr Sensible this week, Mr Ken Morrison is a disgrace!”

The club have gone out of their way to make football affordable to as many people as possible, but crucially only after ensuing they still receive an adequate amount of money. It shouldn’t be forgotten, through all the apparent doom and gloom, the motive. City are not cheapening the club, trying to get in dodgy finances and even undermine a fellow local club, they are trying to make football affordable to people in the local area.

As for putting off true fans. True fans as the ones who go to watch city come what may, whatever division they are in. true fans pay the £150 and look upon anything extra as a bonus. True fans will be disappointed if promotion isn’t achieved next season, but will still come back the season after whatever the cost. It’s the floating fans who are the concern, but then again how could you possibly know how a true fan would feel?

One final point I’d like to make, if the 9,000 isn’t achieved will this be a disaster? I strongly believe the club should not issue free season tickets if the target isn’t reached. We would still kick off next season with crowds of around 10,000 and if a promotion challenge can be sustained more fans will come on a match by match basis anyway.

Well said Bradfordsunwin. The bottom line is City fans are being incredibly childish and tight with their cash. Even if the 9,000 target is not met, £150 is still dirt cheap for an adult season ticket. It seems some City fans are playing a game of cat and mouse, waiting to see if the target will be met before committing. It will backfire when the only option they have is to fork out £300!

Not everyone works in offices mate (im not suggesting you are some sort ot tycoon earning mega money), and I would hazzard an informed guess that the majority of people in and around bradford work in low paid unskilled jobs.

Listen I think £150 is pretty damned reasonable, but the fact of the matter is, that there are a lot of people out there who would rather pay £75 by going in with there mates, and with the cost of living going no where but up, you cant really blame them.

Like I said, gret idea in principle, but they should have maybe done some research first.

And can we stop with this true supporter **** .... If only the true supporters goy one, we wouldnt make it past 6000 ... fact

you dont really think people will pay full whack to see 4th Division football do you? (not week in week out anyway) ... if we do not make it to 9000 they will have to drop the gate prices to the level that this division is worth.

No, I suppose they won't. But that wasn't really the thrust of my argument. I just think City fans are shooting themselves in the foot -remember last year we sold 9,000 + adult tickets. What's changed, besides BETTER prospects....

I agree City fans are childish, if they were not childish they would not be City fans. I refer to the one's who just cannot see the true facts behind the offer. It was a business offer by a business. Football is now a business and as such certain rules apply. If it was a Club in the true terms all members would be able to look at the real figure. Time will tell as it has before and then you will all say, 'I knew all along.'

If we are wrong and you are right, you should have no problem explaining why this is. I look forward to reading your carefully argued, logical response which explains why BCFC are ripping off their fans and the season ticket offer is so disgusting you won't entertain the idea of buying one.

People respond because he speaks the truth and they feel that they have to defend themselves for the actions that they have taken. I am a fan of the City as a Club but I am sorry to say that I was a big fan at the time of Mr Richmond and was well aquanted with most of the staff and players. When GG left for very obvious reason I am sorry to say that things started to go downhill. GG could cut his losses and get out because he had the means of doing so. I just feel very sorry when I see the offers come on board and they are taken at face value. Everybody on here seems to take everything on face value. The new offer to Halifax residents is a prime example. I am not saying that the idea did not come directly from and is sponsored by Mr Ackroyd, I don't know, but do you? There appears to be more action on selling the seasons tickets than getting players in. Just look at Huddersfields marketing - honest and straight to the point with no gamble on the price of the tickets. It worked.

I am sorry but I think, as time ticks on, 'Mr Sensible' is getting proven right. Although, on paper, it was a nice gesture by the club to reward fans by giving them another ticket, it has actually had an adverse effect.

So how is it a bad scheme? Simple answer is that last season we sold 9,000 adult tickets and this year we are struggling to get 6,500 signed up. The reason? Fans that watched us last season are hoping to go halves on next season's tickets. That is a fact and unfortunately, will mean we actually have less fans at City next season than last.

Although Mr Sensible grates people with his constant negativity, facts speak loud and he looks to have nailed this argument. Had we just said the tickets were £150 each and then made the gesture once the 9,000 target had been made, it would have prevented these problems.

I for one bought my tickets (1x adult, 1x youth and 2x children) in February as I would have gone irrespective of the deal, but sadly not everyone operates like that.

FACTS:- Notso Sensible is invited to respond "To refresh your ability to recall other offers they are:- " L***s you can pay £650 for your ticket, Barnsley £360, Huddersfield £175 in certain parts despite the £100 offer, Burnley £396, Oldham £328, Rotherham £396 are these good value?? R.S.V.P."
Not surprisingly it does not respond.
The nearly 17000 is actually 877 short at Huddersfield and includes a substantial number of kids/students and senior members! In all fairness congragulations to Huddersfield you have to applaud the scheme and take up. In comparison we have sold 7777, not as many as I would like but still very respectable for a mid table team last season. IF YOU ARE A TRUE FAN rather than a bitter and twisted sniper, then do the honourable thing and be the first in line for a Full Price Ticket. By the way I do not think the terms and conditions allow you to 'give your ticket away', but perhaps you can correct us all on that point.
Let's hope we sell more tickets BUT even if we do not hit 9000 I am not bothered personally as £138 for a whole season football and even £150 (with free tickets for younger kids has to be a steal? Unless you are a sad B****r who has an obsession with promotional deals.
P.s Are you stilol an Education and Finance adviser?

I understood your comments and was going to explain them to Globalman before I realised you had posted again.

However, you say people aren't going to pay 'top whack' of £300 for a season ticket. I know a few people that said they weren't going to go much last season and ended up watching most games at £20 a time; and that was with a disappointing side. If we do make a charge, as we all expect them to, the fans will come and the majority will have to pay 'top whack' each and every match.

Yes, the deal is, in hindsight, a lame duck, but to suggest the club are doing anything improper or ripping off their fans is ludicrous.

Last season, I paid £138 for my adult ticket. I paid £69 for my son's ticket and my 2 daughters got in for nothing. Total price was £207.

This season I have parted with £225 for the same seats. A huge £18 increase! The club made a bad decision to promote the free ticket offer. Had they not said anything about the free tickets and then sent an extra book through the post with a letter thanking them for their custom, this would have worked much better. However, for you to say this is improper and 'a business offer from a business' doesn't make sense. We may end up making less money from this offer so how was it a 'business offer'.?

I agree with you that it was perhaps the wrong idea, but don't use this mistake to beat our club.

What disappointing news. I've got tons of respect for the Chairman and board at City but I think it's a really cruel mistake to try and cash in on Towns problems. It's very clumsy to suggest that that we are doing anything other than trying to capitalise on their misfortune. The cheap season ticket offer at 150 quid is tremendous, it brings the game back to the people, the loyal supporters, at a fair price. The likes of me who can only get over to see 4 or 5 games in a season are happy to pay the 20 quid a game in the knowledge that regular supporters have the chance to see the games at a fair price as a reward for their support. Please don't poach from Town in this way, sure, they can buy at the 150 quid like anyone else but lets not add to Town's woes by making it even cheaper for their fans. Lets leave this sort of thing for Mr Bates and his crew at Leeds. Good luck Halifax you're right, 'it's disgusting'.

The £150 buy-one-get-one-free offer was a massive gamble by the club, and we will know in a week or so whether it has paid off, or is a complete disaster. The novelty of cheap fourth division football has worn off. After last season's mediocre campaign, many of the 12,000-plus fans on cheap tickets will question whether they want to make a season-long commitment, regardless of the price.

If City only sell 7,000 adult tickets, McCall's budget will be even lower than last season, and the fighting fund will not plug the gap. With a modest budget, Stuart will end up with a mediocre squad, and we will be in mid-table again. In which case, very few people will turn up to pay £20 on the gate, which is a truly outrageous price for watching fourth division football.

I hope I'm wrong, but I fear that City could be heading for financial disaster unless they come up with a realistic business plan that optimises income rather than maximising attendance.

It's clear that Mark Lawn is very worried, and the attempt to poach Halifax support shows his desperation and lack of sensitivity.

Carrying on from your theme of not announcing the 'free' ticket idea Waynus, a better idea may have been to increase to £150 as they have done, then give a 'free' ticket to any and all fans who had bought one the previous year, this way ensuring loyal fans get rewarded and the fools who are attempting to save £75 by going halves with a mate would have had to purhase their own again. This could carry on season after season and obviously someone who bought a ticket this year for £150 for the first time would then qualify for a 'free' one next season at say £199. This sort of offer could only continue for a few seasons but would build a decent regular fan base with an increasing revenue behind them. Also once this franchise of the tea bars etc is brought back in house the profits from that would increase dramatically, if the staff were of a good enough education level to count and pour HOT water onto supposed HOT drinks.

Do you really think the club hasn't already thought of the next step should we fall short of the 9,000 target?

I understand why people feel as they do- but those that were gonna buy are gonna buy and those that weren't wont!

9,000 is optimistic but even based on what we already have- is a fantastic level of support for a 4th Div club- no matter what anyone says.

Our away support is magnificent and will remain that way.

I think- even with a slightly better squad than last year- we will at least manage the play offs.

If we start well and are in the top 5 by October (ish) then watch the gates start to rise.

£20 does sound a lot but you get a freebie if you bring an under 11- so that's now £10.00 each.

At the end of the day success on the pitch will be reflected in the numbers in the stands- I fully expect we could hit 15,000 a game if we are pushing for promotion.

Let's not forget we DO have a good fan base- and one that has definitely been put through the wringer over the last 8 years or so.

Bring back decent results and the fans WILL return.

They always do.

Crikey 7777 fans signed up and people are unhappy. Apart from MK Dons and their last minute swell of support when they were virtually assured of promotion then we are again the best supported club perhaps 2:1 season ticket holders better than the next team. Anyone care to make an objective comment.
Still feel the £150 ticket deal is good irrespective of the BOGOF add on. Personally that was no motive whatsoever. However £150 for 23 home games is stonking good value. Clearly Senseless and those of a like mind who abhor BOGOF's can now buy a single ticket with a clear conscience (after 15/6/08, however 'it' could order now at £300).

I bet Mark Lawn is wishing he's knocked season tickets on the head! How much rubbish can be written about them? I'm with keep on clucking. Let's move on, it's really, really , really boring!
