Rhodes sets double promotion target

Ambitious Julian Rhodes today predicted City can be back in the Championship in two years.

The joint-chairman has thrown down a double challenge to Stuart McCall to win promotion - for the next two seasons!

Rhodes revealed that McCall's war chest has been increased for a full-on tilt at the top three and he believes the momentum of a successful promotion assault can carry them straight through League One.

He insisted: "Our realistic target is back-to-back promotions. That's why we're pushing the boat out this season and expanding the wage bill.

"We're looking at the top three this season and then the top two next, or at a minimum reaching the play-offs. We have to have a good season and Stuart knows that.

"But he's more disappointed than anybody about the slump last September and October which cost us. He's determined to put it right."

Rhodes believes City can use their impressive fan-base as the momentum to follow Hull's lead and shoot back up the divisions after years of misery.

"People might think Rhodes is off his rocker again but there's absolutely no reason why we can't get to the Championship very quickly and then be a force in that division," he said.

"We can emulate what Doncaster and, in particular, Hull have done. We're a similar size club to Hull, which may seem a strange thing to say considering they are in the Premier League and we're in League Two, but if you go back seven years, it was the reverse situation.

"In 2001, Hull were in administration and locked out of Boothferry Park. Then they moved into the new stadium, turnover went up from £2.5million to £10million and crowds from less than 3,000 to 18,000.

"Four years ago, they got promoted from League Two and here they are about to start a season in the Premier.

"Of course they managed it very well, first under Adam Pearson and now with Paul Duffen, but the stadium move was the catalyst. That provided the momentum.

"It's been proven that attendances improve dramatically because people want to go to a nice new stadium. When you just develop the one you've already got, as in our case, that doesn't happen.

"So we're looking at different means of doing that by building the fan-base with our season-ticket initiative. It's not easy in League Two but the fans have been magnificent.

"If we do go up with our cheap ticket policy we might get 15,000 season-ticket holders. That would give you a great basis for a good squad to do well in League One."

City are closing in on former Huddersfield midfielder Chris Brandon and Rhodes insists the quality on McCall's summer shopping list will justify his confidence.

"I'd like to think some of the players we do end up signing might make people sit up and take notice," he said.

"It's never easy because when you go for the better players there are always a whole host of clubs interested.

"That was the case with Garry Thompson. We were very close to getting him but he had the chance of joining a club in a higher division and playing the likes of Leeds and Leicester.

"He's 27 and has played most of his career in the Conference, so you can't blame him, but one or two others we are targeting will raise eyebrows."

If we cleaned up and improved our Stadium, would that attract more potential Supporters?.At the moment, we would be enhancing the 'OWNERS'PENSION ASSETS.

How I wish we could 'BUY BACK' our Stadium, and start to improve certain areas, eg.The Dressing Rooms.

I hope Supporters will be allowed to see The Dressing Rooms, on our 'OPEN DAY/WEEKEND'(JUNE15/
16),to witness their poor condition.

Its great to hear the positive comments from Mr Rhodes but what else could he actually say "Lets consolodate ourselves in League 2". All chairman talk like this in the close season otherwise fans would stay away. I truelly hope his/our dreams are fulfilled and if any person deserves success its RHODES. Without this fella the club would have folded. Personally the new season can't come quick enough as long as some of those targets are captured which I'm sure will happen. Finally I agree with STM that we shouldn't pump money into the stadium that's the landlords job.

Could have been worse Darryl. He could have said, "rust bullet hole". Now if you had said "check" to that, I would have been worried!

Great interview Rhodes. Can't wait to see who the other players are that <cCall has targetted. With the increased size of the war chest, the signings might just shut up b-wildered, Shaun and sensible once and for all.

Nowt like a good bout of Chairman's Optimism to perk up a very mundane Thursday! And why not? It just goes to show that JR & ML aren't prepared to settle for mediocrity. There are 4 promotion slots up for grabs and with the right signings there's no reason why we can be in the mix, or better, come next May.

The one thing we have got now, which we haven't had since Jags, is a management team who will sweat Claret & Amber for the cause. I'd suspect that Macca would be the first to admit that anything less than a top 3 finish would be a travesty. So wild statements from the boardroom aside, I reckon McGod & Co will have already set their own benchmarks for the coming season, and it won't involve slumming it at this level for another year.

Not much silence in a morning after Stella in the Junction and a Jalfrezi from the Curry Cottage the night before...an ode to Johnny Cash and 'Ring of Fire'!!!

Moving swiftly on, I'm waiting with baited breath for the signings to materialise, and have faith that we will have a stronger starting XI, stronger squad, and better chance of promotion this coming season, I can't wait for it to start. CTID

How many players from last season do you think will start the first match of new campaign. I am truly excited about the new signings expected but I personally am eagerly anticipating seeing a fully fit Willy Top playing in a slightly better team, I still think this guy could play a massive role this season. Anyone heard any rumours on a keepers for next year?

There is more chance of Gordon Brown still being in 10 downing street than Bradford City being in the Championship in 2 years time.

If Rhodes told you the moon was made of cheese your claret and amber tinted glasses would have you believe him.

Gulible till you die ;)

you are dreaming or youve taken an overdose of optimism tablets wait while the effects wear off and you will realise you are talking about bradford city who have to get out of the basement first and it might not happen next season.
Skippy .... we're allowed the optimism, surely without you and your mates negative 'theories' just for once yeh? If you don't want to join in with the MAJORITY of true fans, DON'T. I know it's BCFC, we've seen it before, basement to premiership, why not again? Why not next year to start the climb? Who will the other clubs in our league be intimidated by? CITY. You watch.

BCFC will not be in the Championship in 2 years time, unless league 2 is rebranded as such.

At least this two-year goal makes a change from all the clubs who have five year plans. It seems there will be 91 teams in the Premier League in 2013 if you listened to each chairman.

Lets hope the club can do it. 'Realistic' target is talking it up big time! I would settle for 'Reasonable'. Still we need to do better than 10th (Chris Rotherham were ninth). Still no reason why it cannot be achieved. I think we can make it to stability inthe Championship but in two years may well be overly ambitious. Back in the USSR days they had 5 year plans perhaps that is 'Realistic'.

When it happens I will be glad. Until he signs it's a crock of s**t.

I attended a Premiership 'signing' as press some years ago. Photos in the morning with the 'new signing' and his name on the shirt. By lunchtime his agent had found him 5,000 a week more and he walked out without even touching a piece of paper. Hence no new 'signing' and a wasted trip ooop North. Plus a great dollop of horse sh1t on the face of the club.
HIS THIS THE SAME GUY BET IT IS???

Obviously a marketing ploy to get some season tickets sold.

As we discovered early last season, the talking is done on the field, not off it.

It's all well and good having transfer targets but I'll be interested how many of that list we actually sign. Somehow, if they're that good, I don't think they'll be busting a gut to join us.

WOW, Now thats what you call sticking your neck out,but where are Rhodes & Lawn going to get the money from to build a team capable of achieving back to back promotions, I mean if it is that easy why have Leeds who attract crowds of 20 to 30000 charging £28 a ticket just failed to be promoted through the play offs. And remember City have only sold around 6500 season tickets at £6.50 a game,So you have to say it can only be a marketing ploy to boost dissapointing season ticket sales at the 11th hour.

Haha yeh but we're already outta league one (had to get it in before the idiots did).

Now, any thing's possible, yes we really do need to be playing LUFC next year. IF they can have a season like this, we won't be as they'll be up, but here's hoping. I would love to be amongst 20000 City fans at Bellend Rd next year - oh yeh and to beat 'em too will be the ultimate laugh.

Good on you Julian, it's heartening to hear such positive words and positive news.

Lets get this clear, he's not made any promises just stated his ambitions for this club and there's absolutley nothing wrong with that.

What would people prefer; a chairman in charge with ambition or one without? I know which I prefer!

We had the 4th highest wage budget last season, now it's been increased and there's no MK Dons or Posh to compete with this time around. Attracting the better calibre players for this level of football should be a real posibility for this club. Hopefully McCall can get them in.
