City vice-chairman calls it quits

Jim Brown today announced he is standing down as City's vice-chairman.

The 51-year-old, one of the key members of the steering committee that helped the club back from the financial brink in 2004, feels his position is no longer so relevant with two men at the Valley Parade controls.

If they had told me four years ago the position we’d be in now, then I would have taken it. That was such a bleak time that you couldn’t look any further than a week on Friday

Jim Brown

"My role has changed in the last 12 months," he said, referring to the arrival of Mark Lawn alongside Julian Rhodes. "When you've two chairmen in charge, it's not that critical.

"We've got new ownership of the football club now and they have their own ideas. It's time to give the new brush a chance and I wish them well.

"I don't leave with any bad feelings and I'm very grateful for the support I've always been given by Julian.

"He deserves so much credit for his self-sacrifice and consistently going above and beyond the call of duty. The club was a mess four or five years ago but we are moving forward slowly and on solid foundations."

Brown, a former chairman at Halifax, was appointed to the City board by Rhodes in January 2005 - six months after that fateful day when the club's future hung by a thread.

He said: "I remember the administrator running round like a lunatic that morning and it didn't look good. He was getting a bit nervous wondering where we were heading.

"When you think about the masses of problems we had in all areas, it was an absolutely dreadful time.

"My biggest fear was not making it to the season. Two weeks before the first game we didn't have anything.

"We didn't have a team; we didn't have a safety certificate so couldn't have played any home games; we hadn't even sorted out a coach to travel away.

"I thought Colin Todd did a great job under difficult circumstances. I don't think people realised just how difficult they were.

"I know we've been disappointed with the results and where we are in the league but when you look at the resources available for teams like Peterborough and Darlington, there is never a level playing field.

"But at least we've got a football club. It's a real testimony to the hard work of so many people that we have got this far.

"If they had told me four years ago the position we'd be in now, then I would have taken it.

"That was such a bleak time that you couldn't look any further than a week on Friday.

"It's going to take some time to start getting back up but hopefully we will have learned lessons from before."

Rhodes said: "I would like to thank Jim for everything he has done. It's a tall order to ask somebody to do things for nothing and we've become very good friends over the years.

"Jim has taken flak at times, as we all do, but it is undeserved flak. In all my dealings with him, I've found Jim to be an honest and honourable gentleman to deal with."

Brown can now concentrate on running his property restoration business and he is also chairman of governors at Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College. But he will still be a regular watcher at Valley Parade.

"I've always been a hands-on individual and always believed in a team effort and people pulling together. There's a new team at the helm, they've put the money in and it's how they see it going forward from here.

"But I've always been a supporter of the club and that won't change. I will be there at home games, whether it's in a box or sitting in the stand."

agreed! Jim Brown and the gang of five, by all accounts, saved City when they were heading to the wall that July morning. They got the broken communication going again and helped a deal be agreed.

While the club were still in adminstration during the first few months of the 2004/05 season, Brown was effectively in charge and his leadership during such difficult times should not be forgotten.

He's always come across as a honest and likeable character, with the club's best interests at heart. if it wasn't for people like him there would be no BCFC and however we progress over the next few years, we should never forget how close we came to going bust.

BCFC has had some horrible times, but we're still all here supporting them and under stuart we will start to go forward. Mark Lawn is making a difference, but it's only thanks to the efforts of people like Brown that he can.

wait for it coming: all the vitriole coming to this thread:sinking ships and all that from you know who!!

thank you for your efforts Mr Brown:very few would have stepped forward at the time you did.

To all those who constantly carp about the way the club is run and managed may I make a suggestion.

provide us please your full analysis of how you would manage this club, its limited financial input and its considerable expenses.

Factor into your calculations how, if you want to sack the manager and his team, the costs of that exercise and how those costs would be funded.

Please provide your fully costed analysis of how this club can be turned around say within 12 months and explain how you reach those conclusions.

Tell us please why your proposals are better than those already in place and how these are more likely to be successful. Please build in a contingency just in case your plans do not work out. For instance where would you raise the cash and from whom to ensure that your plan was financially viable.

If, exceptionally, you cannot do any of this and have it subjected to detailed scrutiny and analysis, then you must forego you right to be destructive in your postings.

If you are to be destructive about every small detail about the club then you should be able to put forward constructive and viable proposals for the immediate benefit and future well being of the football club most of us hold dear.

if not then go forth and multiply and do it quickly: please.

When Jim Brown first got involved in City, I was told it was a bleak day for us. That was coming from a couple of Halifax supporters who blamed Brown for the demise of their club. However, after seeing the amount of work he has put in, sometimes unpaid, he has been magnificent for City. My only question is this. Why has he taken until now to stand down? We have had the joint chairmen in place for about a year now, so why didn't he stand down before now? This is not a critisism of Brown or the board, I am just intrigued as to why he has chosen now to stand down.

One other point and I acknowledge I may be reading too much into this, is this; Does Brown and Lawn see eye to eye? Brown praises Rhodes for all he has done for the club and doesn't mention the work Lawn has since undertaken. Rhodes responded with kind words towards Brown for the assistance he has given him. No praise given from Lawn. Am I reading too much into this?

Thanks Jim for helping save our club. You are more than welcome at valley Parade any time.

so on that basis your allegations of fraud at City must be put at the door of either JULIAN RHODES OR MARK LAWN. Would that be correct?

perhaps you would do us all a favour and go 50/50 eliminating the one wrong answer and leaving the correct answer.

Or are you alleging both are involved in fraudulent activity at City?

Perhaps, thereafter, you would tell us exactly what fraud has be committed, on whom and for how much.

It is interesting to note that he never commented on the fact that several of his postings stating that there was fraud being committed at VP were removed from the thread. It is a very distinct possibility that those withdrawn commenst are now in the hands of the club solicitor.

He will probably come back here with some inane and utterly senselesss comment and observation which has no relevance to anything in particular.

Jim Brown left the club today and not one word of praise from him to mark Lawn an vice versa. Now, I notice we have also allowed Jon Pepper to leave too. Why the cost cuttings?

If Pepper is under contract, surely he shouldn't be allowed to leave until a replacement has been hired. Is this not business sense?

I don't want to sound like one of the 'doom brothers', but am I reading too much into the this morning's news stories relating to Brown & Pepper?

there's no doubt the club is looking much healthier than it was a couple of years back. and hopefully will continue to get better.

maybe browns connection with halifax will resurface.

brown and richmond have LOTS in common with each other. they BOTH were used more as scapegoats than either of them are "blaming". they were BOTH (although chairmen), were still only single members of whole boards. and, despite their apparent "incompetence". i'd have them BOTH back at VP tomorrow.

honesty, hardwork and integrity (they both admitted their failings and fault and took the hit)

they both had a similar effect on the club. built it up from very precarious positions, but, maybe through lack of boardroom support, ended up having their efforts go totally house of cards like before their very eyes...

in short. this is what has kept us alive as long as it has.

It makes me laugh how many football club running supporters we have who all like to say their opinion.

Why is it when something happens its always got to be bad?! City fans need to get out of this negative mindset.

Does anyone actually know that it was this Jon Pepper who was getting the youth players to the standard that we need... no. Only Stuart and Jakes can answer that so just wish him well and move on.

Good Luck Jim.

If there has been a fall out between the powers that be and these people then so be it, lets just carry on and thank them both for their efforts.

They are destined to become one of the top clubs in Europe within four years and te memory will live on for ever. Who is the sensible and who is the daft one. P.S. when City are in the Champions League Final I understand it will be buy one get two free as a reward for the supporters who followed them through the hard times.

so on that basis your allegations of fraud at City must be put at the door of either JULIAN RHODES OR MARK LAWN.

Are our youth team doing well? How many have come through in the time that Pepper has been handling the job? Not one keeper of worth, no decent midfielders that have come through and made the first team regularly, certainly no strikers of promise, and if we actually did have any of these they are allowed to leave at age 15/16 to bigger clubs where they will get lost amongst the many. I personally have a dim view of our youth policy at present, maybe this is the start of a change. Just because we have taken a step to change things doesn't always mean for the negative, little acorns and all that. And as for Jim Brown, he obviously did many things right and for that he has to be thanked, but as he stated himself, with joint chairmen his position is a bit unnecessary.

was free mentioned in the post?

it is not relevant to this thread but there are solicitors on the panel for Citizens's Advice who freely give 30 minutes of their time!

Might it not be that someone who is a solicitor is a City supporter who may just give his time and expertise for free in such an instance.

If someone wants to go down that route let them but it may just be that a firm of solicitors engaged by the club are looking at it anyway.

Gentleman Jim seems a little more SENSIBLE in his comments. Perhaps tyker could look at his own comments and language. I only came onto the site recently because of the lack of variation of the comments. I think I have done very well. Can either of you answer this question, If tomorrow is Saturday and Yeasterday was Thursday, What day is it today.

P.S. when City are in the Champions League Final I understand it will be buy one get two free as a reward for the supporters who followed them through the hard times.
You know what, this post actually sums up why you just donÂ’t get it with BCFC and why youÂ’re wind up comments are so pathetic.

No City supporter expects City to in the Champions League Final in any of our lifetimes and do you know what? We donÂ’t care.

We donÂ’t support BCFC because we want them to rise back to the Premiership, become a force and have a massive fan base around the world. We support them because they are our club and we love them. Love them for what they are, love them because of what theyÂ’ve given us and love them because they are ours.

I feel sorry for you, as a Man U supporter, you might be able to enjoy winning the Premiership and getting to the Champions League Final, but will you be in Moscow? Do you get to ever see them? Does your support ever make a difference to them?

You can sneer at this club all you want for offering stupid season ticket deals and coming across desperate, but you donÂ’t get this club what it means to us and why you come across as so stupid. BCFC will probably never be in the Premier League again, but weÂ’ll still support them for the rest of our lives and have a bloody amazing time doing so.

I don't want to sound like one of the 'doom brothers', but am I reading too much into the this morning's news stories relating to Brown & Pepper?
no you are not reading too much into it,theres been a big fall out at the club and brown and pepper were shown the door, all these nice compliments towards one and other are a smoke screen, brown wanted jacobs out and pepper put in his place lawn was having none of that hense their departure.brown is right about jacobs but im not so sure about pepper as number two anyway we can only hope someone will see sense and get rid of jacobs.
What a load of garbage!

Two weeks ago you were challenged by myself and another fan (sorry forget who) to explain why you think Wayne Jacobs is so rubbish and why you have this personal hatred against him.

And you still havenÂ’t done so!

DonÂ’t start coming on here with your stupid, offensive sneering until you give us a proper reason for doing so. If you believe your own bulls**t you should have no problem doing so.

I don't want to sound like one of the 'doom brothers', but am I reading too much into the this morning's news stories relating to Brown & Pepper?
Yes, Jim Brown's position has become unnecessary, but hasn't that been the case for the last 12 months?

Also, with regard to Pepper, one man doesn't make an academy. He can't be held solely responsible for the lack of talent being produced. The one thing I would say is that academies take a while to set up and start producing. When we were on the brink a few years ago, we ditched the youth team. How is that Pepper's fault that we had to start all over again? Have you seen the facilities at City's youth academy? It isn't a patch on Huddersfield's or our other neighbour's. Again, how is that Pepper's fault? I am sick of hearing everyone picking faults with our academy. It has only been operating a few seasons so needs to be given a few years to bed in. After all, a star in the making is going to sign for a club with good facilities, so we are not yet in a position to snap these players up.

Finally, we have produced a few good players over the past couple of years and these have been sold onto bigger clubs. The kids recently won a tournament in the USA and showed great promise. For the 3rd and last time, I will ask the same question; how is it Pepper's fault... that we keep selling the youth prospects?

And you still havenÂ’t done so! DonÂ’t start coming on here with your stupid, offensive sneering until you give us a proper reason for doing so. no you are not reading too much into it,theres been a big fall out at the club and brown and pepper were shown the door, all these nice compliments towards one and other are a smoke screen, brown wanted jacobs out and pepper put in his place lawn was having none of that hense their departure.brown is right about jacobs but im not so sure about pepper as number two anyway we can only hope someone will see sense and get rid of jacobs.

NOTSO sensillbelly,
We read your rants all the time. We know that you are really not a City fan, and have a puerile attitude given your malicious posts.
However if you have anything to offer and the way you go on and on, would suggest that you think you do, then I (and I guess a lot of other posters) invite you to clarify the following:-
What is the miraculous plan you have to turn the fortunes of the Club around. Respond giving a clear financial strategy based on sound economics with projections based on different variable outcomes (I have seen you telling Building SocietyÂ’s how to run their affairs). Then clarify who should manage the Club, both playing and support staff. Which players you deem fit and affordable to take the Club forward. Perhaps you could produce sketches of the new kit you think we should play in. Comment on issues such as drinks/beverages/sna
cks being sold. Where do you think the away fans should be located? What would your stewarding policy be?
Finally what price do you think the fans should be charged to purchase season tickets? Come up with comparable figures for Man U, L**ds, Hudds Town, Oldham, Rochdale, Halifax, Farsley, Harrogate Town, and demonstrate which model would be best suited. Until you can come up with something reasonable, The as ever please press the delete button before you post.

Listen everyone- it's clear Mr. Sensible is a wind up merchant.

He cannot and will not back up his comments when directly asked.

He has failed to answer all of mine to date.

Let's leave him to his own MUFC/CFC/LUFC world.

I have to totally agree with JM from Skipton.

I don't support BCFC 'cos its fashionable- I support them and have done so since 1979 because I want to.

I don't seek glory nor do I expect we will ever get into the Prem again.

In fact it wasn't that good- seeing the team chasing shadows most of the time.

No I want to go to the game on a saturday full of hope that we can win the game.

I want to stand up and shout for the team knowing I can make a difference.

I like the thrills and spills of lower league footy.

I laugh and cry when I see shots at goal go for a throw in.

Do I really care- do I fcuk.

I- along with every other city fan will go down to VP full of hope for next season.

Do I care what the financial angle of the season ticket deal is- do I fcuk.

Since when has it ever mattered to the fan in the street about the clubs tax liabilities re season tickets?

Like never.

So Sensible your and any other naysayer's dross and drivle really doesn't matter- to me or anyone else who loves the club cos you will never stop me supporting BCFC.

Now take a note of this, If you buy a season ticket before 15 June I predict you will ALL get an extra ticket, no I do not mean 9,000 will have been sold.It may be that it is said they have been sold or just a straight good will gesture to the fans. Unfortunately I assume the offer will be just before the start of the season and the choice of seating will be limited. For your information called in at HSBC yesterday and my account is in credit. Come on then lets have some of your comments and let your SENSE rule your head.

Didn't blame anyone Waynus, I asked a pertinent question, how many youngsters have come through in the time Jon Pepper has been with us? We are all aware of the couple of promising youngsters who have recently moved, and these were 14/15 year old. I don't think the coach can be held responsible if the club shifts these kids out instead of trying their hardest to hold onto them. What I did say was, I am disappointed at our youth set up, 1, when we do develop a player he is gone long before he gets a sniff at our first team, and 2, how many actually make it through to the first team. The idea of having a youth policy is to generate a batch of youngsters who will be good enough to bolster a first team squad, and maybe become saleable assets in the future. Now how many have we produced in the time JP has worked in that department which fall into either category above? Any club can be fluky enough to have one or two outstanding talents, it doesn't mean the work done by the parent club has developed this, it just means the kid has talent. The work of a youth set-up is to produce, develop and coach youngsters into a position where they can be of benefit to the parent club, and I personally have not seen to many of these in claret and amber.

I do not see how you can expect to have a first class youth set up within a fourth division club, thats a fact. If you had a talented lad would you want him to go to Bradford City. All change at Valley Parade, we only hear about the front of house staff leaving, what about the backroom staff. It's gone down and down and no I am and never have been one, always had a secure job.

We could do what Reckless has done? Leave the site completely and leave these pathetic inbred banjo players to play with themselves? Then the T & A might ban them? Boycott the site, go watch old City footage on Utube instead? Why don't we just go to a City forum where we can have a say on what is removed?

I ignore him and have suggested umpteen times for others to follow suit. However, you can't force people not to reply to his posts and unfortunately you will always get someone who will respond. The man is a wind-up merchant and is looking for a bite. Don't give him the chance to hook you in.

All that said, I do actually agree with him on this one. We are a fourth division side with a newly established youth academy. Why should we expect to be pulling through a team of first teamers?Good academies take years to set up before they start bearing fruit. Ours has only been running (properly) for a couple of years. Look at Huddersfield's or Derby's for that matter. They don't produce overnight, it takes time.

If you had a son that had potential as a footballer, whould you send him to an established academy or let him go to another club, just because it is a club you love. Remember, there is your son't career at stake here if the wrong decision is made. That is why we are struggling to get a good academy started.

Our 'beloved friend' isn't wrong on this matter.

Mr Sensible might be a wind up merchant looking for people to take his bait, but I canÂ’t help but feel angry when I read his posts.

Maybe IÂ’m wrong, but I always felt these boards should be used for City fans to have some intelligent debate and banter about City matters. Sure weÂ’re not always going to agree on everything and I have no problem with other fans arguing my points, but these boards have descended into poor unintelligent debate and name calling and itÂ’s depressing.

IÂ’m sure the powers that be at the T&A donÂ’t want it to be like this, but there is clearly no moderation. You can say itÂ’s all about opinions and itÂ’s wrong to silence people, but people like Sensible, Skippy and Shaun consistently make wild unsubstantiated allegations that they pass off as fact, without making any reasoned argument to back them up. ItÂ’s hardly democratic to consistently slander and abuse hard working individuals like Wayne Jacobs, Mark Lawn etc

To be honest IÂ’m in two minds over whether to keep viewing and commenting on these boards. It genuinely makes me angry reading SensibleÂ’s put downs on a football club I care about and IÂ’m sure my life will go on just as happily if I just read the T&A story and then click to another website before looking at the comments below it.

Now that's actually about as truthful as any of the garbage you produce.

Seriously, no one on here would deny you your say in regards to what you call 'the truth' if you were man (or woman?) enough to back up your points with a reasonable explanation. Big neil, Fully agree but look at the league tables and see where Crewe are. A First Div Club, more prospects. You cannot go against league positions and you cannot disagree that City are in decline. When were they in a worse league position?
