Promoted Spenborough find it tough

The Northern Track and Field League started its four-meeting season on Saturday.

Spenborough were in Division Two at Wigan, Bingley Harriers in Division Three at Preston, and Bradford-Airedale, Pudsey & Bramley and Skyrac in Division Four at Oldham.

Newly-promoted Spenborough found life difficult at Wigan, coming fifth, despite wins by Josh Cayenne in the 100 metres and 200m (11.6sec and 22.9), Jonathan Hepworth in the hammer (45.15m) and B-event wins by Craig Yates (200m), Jake Rowlands (400m), Richard Martin (hammer) and Catriona Gentleman (hammer).

Bingley started their promotion bid as winners on a sunny but very windy day.

Noteworthy women's performances by Janine Crosby in the hammer (33.11m) and discus (35.38m) and Philippa Medley in the high jump (1.55m) were rounded off by the team winning the 4x400 women's relay (4min 14.1sec).

The men's 100m and 5000m pairings of Matthew Cottam (11.1sec) and James Caine (11.2sec), John Convery (16min 9.5sec) and Stewart Macdonald (16min 6.6sec) were supported by winning the team 4x100m relay in 45.3sec.

Bingley welcomed a host of runners at senior level: Tom Crowley, Phil Jones, Medley, Vicky Harris, Carly Robertson, and Jo Bullock.

Meanwhile, Emma Ogden in the pole vault and Tim Midgley in the steeplechase got valuable points in very technical events.

Airedale's Simon Forde was busy on Monday, meeting representatives of the high-performance centre of Athletics Canada in Halifax (the Nova Scotian version).

Partly to organise the summer camp hosted by Airedale in Belgium, arranging the Grand Prix meetings to be attended, but also undertaking a pre-selection of the 15 Canadian middle-distance athletes who will be invited to attend.

Detailed talks are progressing with head coach Dan Henningar of Dalhousie University to build long-term structural links between Atlantic Canada middle-distance athletics programmes and Airedale Athletics in Bradford.
