Ricketts may have played last game

City are unlikely to see Donovan Ricketts again after immigration officials blocked him from coming back into the country.

Ricketts, whose contract is up at the end of the season, is stuck in Jamaica - and looks to have played his final game at Valley Parade.

The 30-year-old keeper, one of the highest earners in the squad, would also be in breach of contract if he is unable to turn up to work for training.

Ricketts was stopped at Heathrow Airport on Friday as he returned with Omar Daley from international duty.

An official noticed that although he had a valid passport and work permit, Ricketts had not got the necessary stamp in his documentation to meet UK employment laws.

He was promptly refused entry and put back on a plane to New York, where he hoped to get the passport stamped at the British Embassy.

But when City contacted the immigration agency in Sheffield, they were told that Ricketts had not completed the paperwork within the six-month deadline of the work permit being issued - and therefore it was viewed as invalid.

City could have applied for a new work permit but that would have been turned down because his contract is up in three months; Jamaica are outside FIFA's top 70, so he does not meet the international requirements; and he is no longer the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

"We tried everything we could to get Donovan back in but rules are rules," said City boss Stuart McCall.

"I like the fella and I'm disappointed that he's back in Jamaica. I would love him to get back but the longer things go on, it doesn't look good."

Ricketts, who last played for City at Wrexham in January, saw a move to QPR collapse in the transfer window because of work-permit problems.

McCall brought in Scott Loach on loan to replace him and the Watford youngster has appeared in every game since.

If we pretended the be Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal and appeal again, do you think we could get this decision overturned? I think so. One rule for the big teams and one for the rest of us. How many times do we hear of smaller clubs having work permit applications turned down and bigger clubs having theirs granted on appeal?

Personally, it will be good to get him off the wage bill, though I fear we may still end up paying his wages until the end of his contract. It would be nice to be able to say a proper goodbye to him though. He was never our best keeper, but always stayed professional.

Disgusting when you think of the amount of people in this country not paying tax like Donovan does and being able to sponge off the state legally.

So no we won't be paying his wages till the end of the season. Unlucky for Donovan but good for the club financially.

Cibasteve, yes I agree it's disgusting - if Donovan were driving round in an Imprezza rally car or Mitsubishi Evo without a job we'd be a touch suspicious. However he was/is a decent bloke and should be allowed to work here as he was putting in to the system. However this isn't the place to get all angry about the cr*p system in the UK, it's a financial plus for BCFC. As a gesture to Donovan maybe when this has all blown over, maybe BCFC could fly him to UK (on a holiday visa) for a friendly match so he can be given a send off he deserves? The majority of fans would be pleased to say goodbye properly I reckon.

one would ahve thought that with all the problems over the "transfer" and the validity of his employment contract etc etc he and his agent would have sat down with experts and or the immigration officials to make sure that all the necessary paperwork was in place to allow him firstly to leave and come back in an unfettered way and also to consider his future employment status as City went public and said they were not going to renew the contract.

I do have sympathy when considering his legal position as being a tax payer here etc etc compared to illegals who contribute nothing BUT there is a difference. Here is a professional footballer probably earning more per week than most of us earn in a month, who knows his employment status is threatened, who has had a run in already, who has professional advisers by way of agents etc but who cannot apparently get his rear end into sorting the problem-- quote that Ricketts had not completed the paperwork within the six-month deadline of the work permit being issued - and therefore it was viewed as invalid..

I am not certain whether it is in his contract that he has to have all the correct papaerwork--if there was a clause he is in breach of contract and, therefore, City could dismiss him. However if no such clause was inserted I would say that the PFA will insist City pay up his contract.

My view would be to say-- He is in breach of contract:we will terminate the contract forthwith and not pay him. It will be for the player than to contest it but if he is not allowed to re-enter then he may have severe problems doing that and it will be a costly exercise.

Someone said he could re-enter on a holiday visa--maybe so but that would preclude being gainfully employed.

In conclusion the player has no one to blame but himself and he must look at his own inactivity in seeking to ensure his passport was validly stamped. In doing so he will conclude that he has caused the situation to arise.

Oh Peanut no, Stuart was being politically correct! He has to balance his comments along with his wages bill and I reckon City as a business will benefit, regardless of how 'disappointed' the management say they are.

Tyker, you are right to point out that Donovan should have had his own paperwork sorted out long before all this came to light, but hey that's what his agent should be following through for him surely? Once again a problem with agents cropping up in football.... taking the pay and not doing the job right. DR should kick his agents butt! He's a goalkeeper not an immigration expert, his own management should have this sorted out. BCFC's management I'm sure would have this paperwork correct with every 'i' dotted and 't' crossed if it were to favour them. Nothing personal Donovan but you were being paid to train and sit on the bench, not what we need at the moment. Good luck with wherever he ends up.

well, thery're a bit late in retracting it, if it is. both of them are. we all know how they like to play these things "together" ;)

if it is, it's a particularly cruel and evil one, in fact it's on a par with the "l88ds ceases to be a city as of midnight" one a few years back, and that lufc would gave to join city to carry on playing. oh how i loved believing that one was true, even if it WAS only for a short time :D in that case, it was cruel to find out it WAS all just an april fools' joke :(

but if it is true, then, as much as i like and admire don, we do have a good keeper to at least take over, and if his contract is up soon, and all the trouble that would entail, etc etc, then maybe we just have to accept it and cut our losses, but yep, why on earth wouldn't somebody ie his agent, make sure his paperwork WAS in order? (which is another thing that doesn't ring true ;))

but anyway, interesting, but not surprising that it's bringing out the old "immigrants/dole-dos

but, as they say, there's no fool like an old fool. ;)

I am not certain whether it is in his contract that he has to have all the correct papaerwork--if there was a clause he is in breach of contract and, therefore, City could dismiss him. However if no such clause was inserted I would say that the PFA will insist City pay up his contract.

But I am certain he will have a clause saying he must be able to play for City when not injured or suspended, being out of the country no matter who's fault fails his side of the contract, so a good saving for the club, and I would like to bet we didn't try overly much to get round any of Don's recent problems. Anyway bye Don, not the worst we have had (Zabica), but not the best either, just a nice big fella who people kept hitting the ball at.

I read recently that Schwarzer is likely ot leave boro at the end of the season. He would be a great (re) acquisition! And could no doubt help out coaching wise and as a mentor to the likes of Loach - Watford and Loach himself would be much keener to have him learning from someone like Schwarzer!

This isn't a platform for Chris and his bnp buddies to join in either, I don't want to be represented by a bunch of uneducated blind people, but I would like my thoughts on immigration and unemployment brought more top the fore, as obviously do others, which is why this point gets raised time and again. Even in the most unsuitable of places, but you did mention it first.

so Ricketts was sent back to New York-- I bet he had a wonderful time at Immigration and Homeland Security:

He has landed with no valid return ticket so would immediately be investigated and treated as an illegal immigrant trying to unlawfully gain access. He would not have been able to complete the normal holiday visa waiver form for entry:all in all he would have faced some fairly nasty interrogation by the US officials for sure.

My guess is that they would have either incarcerated him as an illegal immigrant or held him in gaol and put him on the next available plane to Janaica and told not to return.

So I think the cahnces of his ever coming back to the UK are nil/zilch/zippo

Now this appears to be true, I don't understand how the club has only just realised he didn't have the right paperwork. Does this mean Omar might not do either?

I think his paperwork must be ok--if not he would also have been refused admission.

I am concerned though at the rapidity in which he was given a 3 year plus contract and his latest performances. Did the club expect to sign up and maybe move him on for a fee? A transfer of a player from a country without the correct FIFA standings and who has not fulfilled enough games for his country in a qualifying period may not be as easily done as possibly thought. So it may just be that City are lumbered with Daley unless he decides that he wants his own contract terminating --by mutual consent as ANDY RITCHIE has just done at Huddersfield!!
