SCUNTHORPE have appointed Bantams legend Stuart McCall as their new manager.

The Sky Bet League One club, who sacked Nick Daws on Friday after just five games as permanent manager, confirmed McCall will be assisted by Kenny Black.

The pair will reunite having been in charge together at Valley Parade for just over 18 months before McCall was sacked by City in February this year after a six-game losing run - though they were still in a play-off position when he left.

Andy Dawson took charge of Saturday's home draw against Barnsley and will be retained as first-team coach, the club said.

"Scunthorpe United is delighted to announce Stuart McCall as the club's new first-team manager," read a statement on the club's official website.

"The 54-year-old will be joined by Kenny Black, who will be the Iron's first-team assistant manager, and has previously worked with McCall at Motherwell, Rangers and Bradford City.

"We're also pleased to confirm Andy Dawson will remain at the club as first-team coach."

Former Scotland, Bantams and Everton midfielder McCall has had two permanent spells in charge of City and steered Motherwell to a second-placed finish in the Scottish Premiership before taking charge of Rangers in 2015.

He returned to Bradford in 2016 and guided them to the Sky Bet League One play-off final in 2017.

Iron chairman Peter Swann admitted he had made a mistake in appointing Daws as the club's permanent manager in May after sacking him on Friday.

Daws had been promoted from first-team coach, initially as caretaker boss following the departure of Graham Alexander in March, and led the club to the play-offs last season.

Scunthorpe have won just one of their first five League One matches and are 18th in the table.
