SEAN Scannell says he can't wait to get his boots on and start the new season.

The winger is chomping at the bit to start the campaign for his new club, when City travel to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

He says after playing his part in City's friendlies, nothing beats playing in a competitive clash.

He is looking forward to getting more minutes under his belt in what he insists is a pivotal season for him.

Scannell has recovered from a frustrating season last time out when he played his final full game in October last year for Burton Albion against Barnsley.

A groin injury he suffered in training a month later cut short his loan spell at Nigel Clough's side. He then returned to parent club Huddersfield Town and found his way to Valley Parade this summer.

The experienced 27-year-old said: "Everybody is excited and looking forward to getting going now.

"After the Carlisle game, we just wanted this week to go quickly. I just want to get the season under way.

"I just want to get as many goals and assists as I can this season to help out the team.

"This is a big season for me as I did not play much towards the back end of last season.

"I am just seeing myself as a player, I am not different due to my experience.

"If we work hard and are committed, we can do really well this season.

"I will probably be one of the players who can help others out as much though.

"As soon as the first whistle goes on Saturday, I will be doing everything I can to help the team.

"I can't wait to be involved and be on the pitch. Training fitness is different to match fitness."

The former Crystal Palace man said he has settled into the Bantams squad quickly and praised his new head coach Michael Collins.

Scannell added: "He has been brilliant. He has given us direct messages, nothing is confusing.

"I like having a younger manager, as he has been a player recently which helps.

"I am knocking around with everyone in the squad. I am settling in brilliantly.

"Hopefully, for myself, I will get on the ball as much as possible. I just want to work as hard as I can for the team and score as many goals as I can get.

"We have a really, really good squad."
