GUISELEY manager Marcus Bignot has insisted that size does not matter, as despite having a small squad and a small budget, he is very happy with the club's recruitment this summer.

One of those new signings, Scott Garner, has been named as captain for the season too. He will lead the Lions out as they travel to face his former side Boston United in their opening National League North fixture on Saturday.

Bignot showed his confidence ahead of the new season, saying: "There was a mass overhaul this summer and recruitment was key but I'm very happy with the squad.

"The side has a new look and I'm delighted with the balance we have. It's only a small squad because of our tight budget but there are still options and competition for places."

Bignot is already thinking forward and he said: ""I'm confident going into the Boston game but we have to look beyond that.

"We're playing twice a week pretty much all month so our main focus has to be making sure we keep our small squad injury-free over that period."

Their first midweek game sees them host Chorley on Tuesday, and Bignot is pleased to back playing in front of a supportive home crowd.

He said: "The supporters didn't have a lot to cheer last season but they still always came out and backed the club. They will be full of optimism this year as well.

"In pre-season, they've seen a group of players who want to play for the club and that's been shown in the performances. The squad have been getting good feedback from the fans too.

"We want to put in good performances although ultimately it's winning games that will send the supporters home happy, which is what we want to do."

Guiseley completed their pre-season programme on Tuesday night with a narrow defeat at Nethermoor against a Barnsley Under-23s side.

A neat backheel by veteran striker Kayode Odejayi opened the scoring for the non-leaguers before a quickfire double by Tai-Reece Chisholm put the Tykes in front.

Harry Flowers powered home a header from a corner to make it 2-2 early in the second half and the game looked to be heading for a draw before Barnsley's Amir Berkovits hit a late winner on the break.

That unfortunate defeat followed a cracking contest between Guiseley and Leeds United last Thursday, which ended 4-3 to the Whites.
