ENGLAND limited-overs fast bowler Liam Plunkett says his move to Surrey can further improve his game.

Plunkett is swapping Emerald Headingley for the Kia Oval at the end of the summer, having not been offered a new contract by Yorkshire.

The 33-year-old has signed a three-year deal with Surrey, with Yorkshire bemoaning his lack of availability as a primary reason for his departure.

"I've really enjoyed my time here," said Plunkett, who started the summer at the IPL and has spent significant time away from Headingley on international duty.

"It's disappointing to leave in one sense because I've won some good trophies here and have plenty of close friends, both in the playing group and the backroom staff.

"But it's a new chapter, and it will inspire me to move my game on.

"I still want to improve. I feel I've got plenty left in me to do that at Surrey.

"I feel I can add more balls to my artillery and better myself with the bat as well. That's a big aim of mine.

"Surrey's a big squad, and it's going to be a completely different challenge having played all of my cricket up North."

When Plunkett arrived at Yorkshire, his career had hit the buffers.

He was out of England reckoning and had even slipped down the pecking order at Durham following a combination of loss of form and injury.

However, Jason Gillespie, Martyn Moxon and Andrew Gale took a chance on him, and it paid off for both parties as he regained his place in the England side and helped Yorkshire regain their Division One status in the Championship before winning back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015.

"You always think in the back of your mind 'I want to win trophies and play for England again', but I didn't really have too much of a picture of it if I'm being honest when I first arrived here," he said.

"I just wanted to enjoy my cricket.

"My aim was to try and enjoy my cricket and bowl fast. Two simple things – nothing else given what had happened at Durham.

"They both happened, and things moved on from there to be where I am now.

"I'm really grateful to this club for helping me along, and I'll miss it when the time comes."

Plunkett has actually missed Yorkshire's last two Vitality Blast T20 fixtures, having picked up a hip injury against Derbyshire at Chesterfield on Saturday.

The Vikings have lost two of their last three in the North Group – two against Derbyshire before getting back on track with a 60-run victory over Leicestershire at Headingley last night.

They sit on 10 points from nine matches and still with a chance of winning a trophy to finish Plunkett's stay with the White Rose on a high.

"No matter who I play for, whichever team it is, I want to win trophies, and we've got a good squad here," he added.

"We just need to get on a run and put the pressure on the teams above us."

Yorkshire face a struggling Northamptonshire side at Headingley on Friday night (6.30).
