BRADFORD Adil Rashid has been called up to the England Test squad, and Yorkshire aren't happy about it.

Rashid is set to make his first Test appearance since December 2016 when England face India at Edgbaston, starting on Wednesday.

White Rose chief executive Mark Arthur says the club are “very surprised” by England’s decision, given that the 30-year-old has not played any form of red-ball cricket since Yorkshire’s County Championship match against Middlesex at Emerald Headingley last September.

In February, Rashid made himself unavailable to Yorkshire in Championship cricket in favour of focusing on his development as a white-ball bowler.

He admitted: “My heart isn’t in red-ball cricket. The enjoyment, the spark, the buzz. All that came into it. I couldn't go through another season doing this.”

But, earlier this month, in a column for Sky Sports’ website, he opened the door for a return to the Test side having impressed in the recent one-day international series against India, including bowling Virat Kohli with a beauty in a win at Headingley.

“If England do want me to be part of the squad for the Test series against India, if the selectors come and show faith in me, I would consider it,” he said.

However, his stance on playing Championship cricket for Yorkshire remained unchanged as of earlier this week, having turned down their request to play in the recent Roses victory at Emirates Old Trafford.

That forced Yorkshire to sign leg-spinner Josh Poysden on a one-match loan from Warwickshire.

After learning of Rashid’s recall to the Test squad following 10 previous appearances in 2015 and 2016, Yorkshire chief executive Mark Arthur said: “We’re very surprised that England have called Adil up after not playing red-ball cricket this season. Neither has he expressed a desire to do so.

“I hope that England know what they’re doing to Adil, and the county game.”

Yorkshire have offered Rashid a new white-ball-only deal for next season, but it remains unsigned.

This development only adds weight to the theory he will be playing his cricket away from Headingley next season, especially given Yorkshire have cited lack of availability as a primary reason for allowing Liam Plunkett to join Surrey.

Rashid, however, is in the squad for Yorkshire’s Vitality Blast matches against Birmingham Bears at Headingley tomorrow and Derbyshire at Chesterfield on Saturday before linking up with his England colleagues ahead of the first Test.
