SEAN Scannell was on the scoresheet as a near full-strength City side beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 in a private friendly at Apperley Bridge.

The winger scored the opening goal after seven minutes and set up the second before half-time with a floated cross that was well finished by Sherwin Seedorf.

With Charlie Wyke injured, Michael Collins fielded a starting line-up that could well take to the field for the opening League One game at Shrewsbury a week on Saturday.

Scannell and Seedorf played either side of Jack Payne, who again impressed in a supporting role for striker George Miller.

Payne headed against the bar from Seedorf's cross just after the break. But he set up the third on 71 minutes with a clever pass that was slammed into the bottom corner by Miller.

Ryan McGowan was among the 10 changes to appear and came through the final 25 minutes after replacing Anthony O'Connor. Right back Joe Riley was the only player to feature in the full game.

Wednesday's side boasted some experience in the shape of Steven Fletcher, George Boyd and David Jones.

Head coach Michael Collins was pleased with what he saw ahead of the final pre-season game at Carlisle this weekend.

Collins said: "It was important for us to continue building. We're slowly getting there and can see bits of improve as we go along.

"It takes time with a new group, some who have been added later than others, and it's important that the lads are going out trying to apply what we've said. Today they've done that."
