THE signing of Sean Scannell should sway Charlie Wyke towards sticking with City this season, according to Jamie Lawrence.

A £600,000 bid remains on the table from Sunderland and Bolton are also in the hunt for the striker.

The Telegraph & Argus understands there has been no movement with the situation since Wyke’s early departure in the Sheffield United game.

Wyke is set to miss this afternoon’s friendly at Harrogate with the knee injury he suffered on Tuesday.

Club sources do not believe the problem is a bad one but, with the season only a fortnight away, there could inevitably be concerns about him missing the start as he did last year.

It is understood Harrogate's artificial surface will also influence Michael Collins's decision to rest others, as he fields a team likely to be similar to the one to have played against Avenue.

But Lawrence believes Scannell’s arrival to provide a supply line for the centre forward could persuade Wyke to think again about a Valley Parade exit.

“If I was in Charlie’s shoes, I’d be giving it a go all day long,” said the popular former Bantams winger.

“I know Sunderland are my old club as well and a big one but they are in transition. I’d forget all that and stick it out at Bradford.

“They had no wide men last season. There was no one who could give him decent crosses.

“Charlie was having to do too much work outside the box instead of in it.

“Centre forwards thrive on crosses. Think back to us with Millsy (Lee Mills).

“We’d just get the ball, cross and we knew that he would score goals. That’s the same with Charlie.

“Sean’s a person who can get bums off seats. There’s an expectation every time he gets the ball that he’s going to do something special.

“Bradford haven’t had that since (Mark) Marshall went and it’s what we’ve been crying out for.

“It might sway Charlie in what he’s thinking. If they make a few other signings along the same line, why wouldn’t you want to stay at Bradford?”

Lawrence has known Scannell since the 27-year-old joined him for a fitness boot camp in the summer of 2014 – and was named Huddersfield’s player of the year the following season.

Lawrence added: “He’s got to go back to basics now – that’s what he did when he came to me.

“Put in all that hard graft and you’ll get the rewards.

“If he does that at Bradford the fans will love him. I know him personally and he’s a trier.

“I’ve told him already that they are the best fans in the world if they can see you putting in everything. You’ll have no problems with Sean on that score.

“He’s a great signing. He’s what they’ve been missing since Marshy and he could be better.

“Sean’s more powerful and direct and has played at a higher level.

“He reminds me of myself a little bit with the way people bounce off him. He can be very destructive on his day.

“Sometimes expectation can work for you. Be a big fish in a small pond and the confidence comes out.

“Not a lot gets to him anyway. That’s the character he is.

“He’s very cool, calm and collected. He doesn’t say much but just gets on with it.”
