CITY are set to sign Middlesbrough striker George Miller on loan today and are closing in on another capture – as they consider giving Charlie Wyke a deadline to decide on his future.

Miller is poised to join the Bantams on a season-long loan, having scored eight goals for strugglers Bury last campaign.

The 20-year-old had come through the ranks at the Shakers before signing a three-year deal with Boro in July 2017 and being sent back to his old club to get game-time.

Meanwhile, Sunderland have joined Peterborough in making bids for Wyke, who is heading into the final season of his contract. And Phil Parkinson’s Bolton are also firmly in the race.

City want Wyke to commit his future to Valley Parade by extending his deal and talks are understood to have taken place.

But the player has given them no indication so far what he is thinking as other interest in him builds.

With the transfer deadline just five days after the season kicks off, City are pushing for a speedy resolution one way or the other to ensure they would have enough time to line up a replacement if needed.

Sunderland boss Jack Ross said: “He’s a player I knew about before I came to England and I think when you see the areas that we need to strengthen and the type we need to strengthen that area, he’s a player that I like.

“But he is contracted to another club, so we will see how that progresses over the coming days.”

Sunderland’s offer for Wyke, like that of Peterborough last week, is understood to fall well short of what City would seriously look at.

Marc McNulty’s move from Coventry to Reading for over £1 million appears to have raised the bar with

fees for lower-division strikers this summer. The Bantams are not prepared to lose their prize asset for a knockdown fee in comparison.

The T&A understands that City are confident of landing another recruit shortly. But it is the situation with last season’s top scorer Wyke that will most concern supporters.

Wyke was among the sizeable group of first-teamers watching Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at York after suffering a knock in training.

But head coach Michael Collins insists the uncertainty over the centre forward is not proving a distraction. And he praised the “grade A” attitude that Wyke has shown.

He said: “Everybody is aware of the interest. It’s quite common within the press.

“I haven’t heard anything directly from the chairman with regards to what’s happening with Charlie.

“But credit to Charlie. He has come in and applied himself exactly as I thought he would.

“I knew Charlie before I took the role on. I expected nothing different and I’ve seen nothing different.

“He’s been an absolute grade A professional and I expected nothing different.”

Wyke, who played the first half in City’s opening friendly last Tuesday at Guiseley, was joined by the likes of Romain Vincelot, Ryan McGowan, Jake Reeves and Shay McCartan in the main stand at Bootham Crescent.

Collins added: “Charlie felt a little niggle on Friday and I wasn’t prepared to risk him.

“It’s not anything long term. But we’ve got to be fair with people.

“I’d like to get everybody out there to ramp them up to the intensity that we want.

“But with certain bodies, we’ve got to err on the side of caution.

“There’s nobody who is carrying anything that is concerning me.

“We’ve got to be very cautious, especially with the way the season is set up with the transfer window closing very soon after the first game.”

When asked about imminent arrivals, Collins said: “We’re always on the look-out and if somebody comes up, we’re going to be interested.”
