BRADFORD AA

Two chub in the last twenty minutes of the match were enough to win Nick Michael The Centenary Trophy on the River Swale at Maunby on Sunday with 6lbs 9oz.

Fishing proved very difficult as the river remains exceptionally low resulting in the chub and barbel spotted along the stretch showing little interest in anglers bait.

The ABU runner up trophy was won by Simon Foster with 26 small chub for 2lbs 11oz.

The win puts Michael back into the lead for the aggregate weight with three matches remaining. His total of 40lbs 12oz is just ahead of James Vickerman (35lbs 1.5oz) and Andy Jacques (33lbs 5.5oz).

The next match will be on the River Aire at Beal on August 5th.

Some sections of the River Calder will be closed on Sunday for the second round of the Calder League. For the draw time, check with your team captain or Simon Foster.

There will be another junior match held at Raskelf lake on July 21st which all junior members are invited to fish. Entry is free and places can be booked through Simon on 01274 571175.

It should go without saying by now but please could members fishing Knotford ensure that all nets, slings and unhooking mats are dipped in the dip tanks provided on entry to the site.

This is to protect all fish stocks from disease and anyone caught not doing so will face a ban from the club. On all other waters where dip tanks are not possible, we ask that members ensure all equipment is dried completely in direct sun light before fishing.

There hasn't been much to report from our river stretches over the last fortnight due to lack of rainfall. but there has been some outstanding catches of trout and grayling coming from the faster pegs on the River Calder at Gravel Pits.

Please could any anglers venturing onto the rivers ensure that fish caught are well rested in the water before being released as oxygen levels are very low.

SKIPTON A.A.

IT was a poor turn-out for the Skipton Angling Association’s Peter Hart Memorial match held on the Sawley Street length of the canal last Sunday, despite good conditions.

Sport was reasonable with plenty of small roach and perch throughout the three hour match. Only one big fish was caught, a splendid perch weighing approximately 750g.

Russell Heaton and Ernie Ramsbotham shared the top honours with 845g each. Simon Chenier was third with 445g and Graeme Waterfall fourth with 415g.

In the competition for the memorial trophy, Russell Heaton consolidated his lead with 34 points with the following some way behind: =2, Mark Bradley and Ernie Ramsbotham 20; =4, Simon Chenier and John Leatt 18 and 6, Graeme Waterfall 16.

Two matches remain to be fished, Embsay Reservoir on August 12 and Whinnygill Reservoir on September 9.

The heat continues to affect sport and the early morning and late evening appears to be the best time for fishing.

During the day, most of the bigger fish are deep down to get out of the bright sun. Sinking lines and a slow retrieve of a lure is recommended for Embsay Reservoir.

Small fish are providing most of the sport at Whinnygill Reservoir with catches of up to 30 perch in a session fishing small lures. A decent sized tench has finally been caught but the rest of them appear to be wily.

Mark Hindle has seen plenty of fish basking in the sun including four groups of carp, seven large shoals of roach, perch, ide, rudd and bream plus thousands of fry.

A working party is scheduled for this Saturday at Embsay Reservoir to remove old broken pipes and rework the beck tributaries with the aim of improving brown trout spawning capabilities.

Please meet at the reservoir for around 10.00 am. The event is open to anyone interested in giving a helping hand.

This Sunday’s summer league match will be fished on the Long Ing length of the canal at Barnoldswick, with the draw at 7.00am.
