BIG crowds basked in baking-hot conditions at Odsal Stadium this afternoon to enjoy England’s record-breaking 6-1 thrashing of Panama, their biggest-ever win at a World Cup.

Cheers rang out as a Harry Kane hat-trick, along with two goals from John Stones and one from Jesse Lingard, ensured Gareth Southgate’s team a place in the last-16 of the tournament.

Bradford Bulls stepped in to show matches involving the Three Lions on a big screen after it was announced the games would not be shown in Centenary Square in the city centre.

More than 500 people gathered to watch England’s nervy opening 2-1 win against Tunisia last week, but that figure was easily surpassed yesterday, with fans enjoying the game in between the State of Origin clash between New South Wales and Queensland and the Bulls home game against Doncaster.

There was a carnival atmosphere in the stadium, with many fans cheering on Southgate’s men kitted out in England shirts, hats, and flags.

As the ground celebrated the win with an airing of the classic ‘Three Lions’ on the stadium PA, fans reflected on a job well done, particularly by England’s hat-trick hero Kane.

Chris and Janey Berridge, of Great Horton, said: “It was brilliant, Southgate has got it. He’s got a good young squad and I think we can go a long way, hopefully the semis. There’s a Kane coming! It’s been a great atmosphere too, thanks to the Bulls for putting it on.”

James Gregory, of Odsal, added: “They played really well, especially first half. I think we can get to the quarter-finals, anything better than that is a bonus. I was sceptical about Southgate at first, I think a lot of people were, but he’s doing alright. It’s been a great atmosphere, a good family day.”

One couple particularly pleased by the result were Dave Green and Anne Fish, who travelled from Blackburn to watch the rugby and won £55 thanks to the 6-1 scoreline.

They said: “We don’t really do football, it was just a lucky guess! Nice to see England win, but if they can’t beat Panama then there’s something sadly wrong!”
