STEVE Patterson has every confidence his buoyant Yorkshire team can help him achieve a bucket list experience of reaching a Lord’s final later this month.

The Vikings stand-in captain hailed the resilience and quality shown by a much-changed team in beating Essex at Chelmsford in Thursday’s Royal London One-Day Cup eliminator clash.

They face Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl in Monday’s semi-final, and he is backing them to do the business again and win a sixth successive match.

“It will be a good game,” said the seamer, who claimed the man-of-the-match award at Chelmsford with 4-36 as Yorkshire defended a 260 target.

“Hampshire are a good side having got straight through to the semis, so they obviously had a successful campaign. But it’s a one-off game. Somebody plays well and comes off, and we can win the game.

“It’s a Lord’s final at stake, so our lads will be right up for it. I was on the Academy the last time we got there (in 2002), and we all got the bus down. Anthony McGrath was playing and some of those boys.

“After winning a couple of Championships, getting to a Lord’s final would kind of tick all the boxes for me.

“The fact it’s moving to Trent Bridge after next year, we’re running out of time. One game away, we’ll give it all we’ve got.”

Yorkshire showed character in bucket loads at Chelmsford. They were 45-4 batting first and recovered to post 259-7; Gary Ballance hit 91, Jack Leaning (57), Tim Bresnan (41) and Matthew Fisher (35no).

Patterson said: “Gary stood up and got a very important 90 for us.

“Jack as well. He hasn’t played the last couple of games, but he steadied the ship with 50 or 60 and was crucial.

“Then, that momentum that Fish and Brez got at the end, that extra 50 or 60 runs, it just swung it for us.

“Instead of being a bit down, we went out with confidence.”
