NEW recruit Josh Wright intends to put himself in the firing line to provide City goals from midfield.

Wright, who signed a two-year deal at Valley Parade last week, is keen to deliver his fair share on the scoresheet.

Midfield goals was an area where the Bantams were severely lacking last term.

Skipper Romain Vincelot weighed in with five, chiefly from set-pieces and all before Christmas, and winger Tyrell Robinson netted three.

Timothee Dieng and loan duo Alex Gilliead and Matty Lund got two each, while youngster Jordan Gibson scored once.

Wright scored twice during his year with Southend but previously netted 14 times the season before last for Gillingham and is keen to hit the goal trail for his new club.

He said: “I’ve come here to score goals, that’s part of what I want to do.

“That’s the aim as well as show what I can do on and off the ball.

“Without putting too much pressure on myself, I do like playing with that expectation and I think it can lift people.

“Adding goals from the midfield is part of it and hopefully that can happen right from the off.”

Wright also hopes to press his claims to be City’s penalty taker, despite missing twice from the spot last season.

The 28-year-old earned national plaudits when he scored a hat-trick of spot-kicks within the space of nine minutes for Gillingham against Scunthorpe in March 2017.

But he failed with two penalty attempts last season both away to MK Dons - for Gillingham in August and then Southend three months later.

Wright is still keen to be put on the spot when the new Bantams head coach takes charge.

He said: “I want to chip in with some goals and penalties are a bonus. I’ll definitely be throwing my hat in the ring.

“I’m sure there are other boys who want to take penalties and we’ll assess that come pre-season. But I like taking them as well.

“The main thing is I just want to get my head down and get working hard to be in that team.

“I want to do everything to help out, whether it’s me scoring a goal or setting them up. As long as we win football games, that’s all that matters to me.”

Wright gets married this week before heading off for a celebration bash in Majorca. But he is also counting down to the start of City’s pre-season at the end of the month.

He added: “I’ve got a busy few weeks ahead of me. The wedding and everything is exciting but during all that I’ll be keeping myself fit.

“I’m looking forward to that and then it’s all about being ready to work hard on the training ground.”
