JOSH Wright insisted the absence of a City boss was not going to put him off joining the club.

The former Southend midfielder signed a two-year deal yesterday and is hungry to get going.

It is approaching a month since City began their search for a new head coach.

But Wright stressed there were never any personal doubts about his Valley Parade move.

He said: “I know those questions are going to come and people have mentioned that to me.

“It was more that the chairman owns the club, it’s his football club and Greg Abbott obviously plays a massive part in that.

“Once I’d spoken with them, I knew the direction and where they wanted to take the club.

“Of course, it was in my mind but there were no two ways about it with it being Bradford City. I wanted to get it done and I’m delighted that has happened.

“I’m obviously going to be looking out who the head coach is going to be. He will be the man in charge.

“But it’s a clean slate for everyone, no matter who’s been at the club and the new signings. The head coach will come in and it’s up to us to impress him.

“We’re going to have to work hard on the training ground and take it when given the opportunity. It’s like that at any club.”

The lure of Valley Parade and City’s crowds swung it for Wright, who had other interest after being released by the Shrimpers.

He has scored there previously for Gillingham and believes the higher expectation from the size of fanbase can bring out the best in him.

Wright added: “A big crowd and atmosphere can suit certain people and for some it doesn’t.

“For me, I feel I get a buzz playing at the big stadiums. It gives me a lift and an extra push.

“I got that at the times I’ve played at Bradford. I felt I’ve done well and been successful.

“It’s a fantastic place. I said that when I met the chairman the week before last.

“I love playing here and that was on the opposition side. It’s going to be even better now.

“The big end of the ground feels like they are going to suck the ball into the net. It’s so tough playing against it.

“Now I’m going to be playing with it, it’s going to be great.”

Wright played 26 times for Southend but admits it was a frustrating season. A hamstring injury hampered his chances in the second half and he started only twice once Chris Powell took over.

He said: “I was delighted to sign for Southend at the time, especially under Phil Brown.

“But I played in a slightly different position and possibly couldn’t show the best of my game.

“I had to do a lot of high-intensity running and wasn’t quite getting the ball that I wanted.

“I love getting on the football and making things happen; getting the ball off the back four but then pushing forward and scoring goals.

“It was tough and maybe the injury came about because of the way I was playing and the amount of running I was doing.

“But that’s in the past now. When something like that happens, there can be a reason to it.

“The fact that I’ve ended up signing for Bradford City is a massive bonus for me and I’m only looking forward.”
