JUNIORS from Bradford Salem had a day to remember when they formed a guard of honour for the England and Barbarians teams in Sunday's Quilter Cup match at Twickenham.

Ten players aged from under six to under eight, who all attend schools that are local to Salem, welcomed the sides onto the pitch after an invitation by England Rugby and Quilter Kids First.

It was a reward for the Shay Lane club's juniors after a busy season in which they have their worked on initiatives such as 'Earn Your Laces' in following rugby's core values.

Salem's juniors – Isaac Birkett, Bronwyn Carter, Toby Carter, Lleyton Clough, Seth Dobson, Noah Gibbs, Harry Luxton, Mia Shuttlewood, Reuben Warner and Joseph Whitford – were accompanied by coaches Matthew Whitford and Geraint Gibbs.

Parent and volunteer Rebecca Whitford said: "It was a real honour for our children to be chosen, an experience they will remember forever, and they behaved impeccably.

"They met at the Lion Gates, were treated to lunch in the Martin Johnson Suite and then formed the guard of honour to welcome the England and Barbarians players onto the pitch before the match.

"Marissa Lowe, the education development assistant at Twickenham Stadium, liaised with me on the organisation of this special event."

It is particularly fitting that Salem were chosen for this duty as the Barbarians were formed by William Percy Carpmael in 1890 in Leuchters Restaurant in Bradford over an oyster supper.
