BRADFORD City should make an “outside the box” managerial appointment, according to a senior official of the club’s Supporters Trust.

And the type of coach he would like to see as a possible replacement for Simon Grayson is England Under-21s manager Aidy Boothroyd.

The former Watford, Coventry and Northampton boss is a local boy having been born in Eccleshill.

While West Bromwich Albion caretaker manager and former City star Darren Moore, Uwe Rosler and Mick McCarthy are among the bookies’ favourites.

Bradford City Supporters Trust secretary Adam Baker has put Boothroyd’s name forward.

He said: “The names on the list of candidates for the job all had a mixture of success and failures, we need to look outside the box.

“I would go for someone like Aidy Boothroyd, who is connected with England and who has contacts with Premier League clubs and at lower level.

“That might be completely unrealistic, but if money was no object Boothroyd would be a great choice. He would be something a bit different for us.

“It’s a difficult situation for us. We need to get the right person in. It is not having lots of money, but how the money the manager will have, is spent. That’s the important thing.

“We have got to make sure the owners make the right appointment.”

The bookies seem to be undecided over the next boss, with a few familiar faces in the frame.

Former City players, Neil Redfearn and Dean Saunders, who both played for the club during its two-year stint in the Premier League, make the list. Former Leeds United and Reading boss Brian McDermott also features.

Ex-Nottingham Forest and Rangers manager Mark Warburton has also crept up the odds list, which also includes Graham Alexander, formerly of Scunthorpe United.

An interesting name among the bookies is ex-England manager Steve McClaren.

Former Leeds United star Harry Kewell, now manager at Crawley Town, has also been linked to the Bantams hot seat.

But Mike Harrison, editor of the City Gent fanzine, says there is no point fans speculating over who the new boss will be as chairman Edin Rahic leads the search.

He said: “It is almost pointless for us to speculate, because as far as we can see, our owners are looking for a head coach, rather than a manager.

“All the people linked with the job are managers, would they want to come in as a head coach instead?

“There is only going to be a certain type of person who wants to come in and be a head coach.

“It’s got to that stage at the club. It is up to the owners to come in and find someone suitable. Hopefully they know what they are after.

“There should be plenty of unemployed managers who are willing to take on a job like ours under these circumstances.

“But I would be happy with a decision sooner rather than later.

“I don’t know if the owners take any notice of what the fans have to say over the next manager.”

Meanwhile, two players with Bradford connections are looking for new clubs after being released by Sheffield United.

Former City striker James Hanson, who scored 77 goals in 283 between 2009 and last year, has been released by the Blades.

Bradford-born Clayton Donaldson has also been released by the Championship club.
