JOHN Kear will not be taking any selection liberties when the Bulls face League One whipping boys West Wales.

The Raiders head for Odsal on Sunday hurting from a record 144-0 defeat at leaders York.

Kear’s side will be expected to follow suit and rack up the points against the division’s basement club, who they eased past 82-6 in the Challenge Cup in February.

But the experienced coach insists he has no plans to make changes to the team just for the sake of it.

He said: “If I’m asking the players to be intense, to be focused, to be ruthless, I’ve got to pick what I feel is the appropriate team.

“It ain’t just going to be because of who we’re playing. I don’t think that’s how you should earn your first-team shirts.

“We’ve also got a reserve game on Saturday against Halifax so we’ve two teams to turn out this weekend. They’ll all get their hands on the football and we’ll see after this, who we pick for that.”

The Bulls currently trail York on points difference at the top after the Knights rewrote the record books. But with a run coming up against some of League One’s smaller clubs, fans will view that as the chance to boost their own scoring account.

Kear added: “They will be expecting that – but then they expect us to win every game. That’s one of the things we’re having to ride with.

“But we’re handling it pretty well at the minute. Obviously, we’ve got to keep doing that with what is coming up in the next month.

“They are different challenges but we’re attempting to keep the same intensity.

“If you get a scoreline anything near to what York did against West Wales, I would suggest that’s not really a game of rugby league.

“We’ve got, shall we say, lesser-rated opposition next week. But then we’ve got to make sure we’ve got our own standards that we have to adhere to.”

Liam Johnson and Vila Halafihi were rested from the win at Doncaster. The Bulls were also without winger Dalton Grant because of a family bereavement.

Captain Lee Smith impressed Kear on his return to the centres and the coach admits there is plenty of competition for places.

“We’ve got a big squad, we’ve got a good squad and we’ve got a competitive squad,” he said.

“You’re seeing the fruits of people with their sleeves up and wanting to make sure they claim the shirts.

“We’ve certainly got players who will be knocking on my door and wanting to get a shirt for this coming weekend.”
