Yorkshire set Nottinghamshire a victory target of 403 during the third afternoon of their Specsavers County Championship match at Emerald Headingley.
The white rose advanced their second innings from 198-4 at lunch to 334 all out.
Harry Gurney claimed three wickets in 10 balls as the hosts fell from 198-4 to 204-7.
He trapped Jack Leaning lbw for 37 and got Andrew Hodd the same way. Sandwiched in between, Gary Ballance played on for a fine 82 off 166 balls.
Ballance and Leaning had shared a stand of 103 for the fifth wicket.
Notts wicketkeeper Tom Moores then took two stunning one-handed catches, diving high to his right, to help Luke Fletcher get rid of Josh Shaw and Jake Ball remove Jack Brooks, leaving the score at 257-9. By that stage, the lead was 325.
Tim Bresnan posted an 80-ball fifty, reached with a pulled six and four off Gurney, and he finished unbeaten on 68, his highest score since September 2016.
Bresnan shared a last-wicket stand of 77 inside 17 overs with Ben Coad, who fell caught at cover to Fletcher for a career-best 33.
Weather permitting, there are 37 overs remaining in the day.
