BRADFORD City Women showed their ability to bounce back as they defeated Stoke City 2-1 in the FA Women’s Premier League.

The Bantams were on the end of a heavy loss at champions-elect Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday, but strikes from Laura Elford and Hannah Smith two days later saw them avenge defeat suffered to the Potters in January.

Those efforts came either side of a Stoke equaliser, with defender Zoe Roberts impressed by her side’s ability to remain positive both before and during the game.

“The result shows what the players and staff know what we’re capable of; that we can compete and get results from the top teams in the league,” she said, after denying Stoke the chance to move into second in the table.

“We came into the game needing a win and we needed to go at Stoke from the start. I think we did exactly that.

“Getting the first goal was a good start and it was well deserved after having the most chances.

“But I think what we did well at was not letting our heads go down when Stoke equalised. To get another goal straight after showed that we were determined to get the win.

“Every player worked for each other and the effort everyone put in is what got us the win.”

City are now preparing for their third game of the week this Sunday, at home to West Bromwich Albion.

Beating Stoke was crucial ahead of that fixture, says Roberts, as they aim to complete another revenge mission after the Baggies beat them 2-1 last month.

“Nobody ever likes to get beat so Tuesday was a big lesson for us, but beating Stoke gives us confidence going forward. It was exactly the reaction we needed,” Roberts said.

“We owe West Brom and it’s very important that we carry this confidence and momentum into Sunday, and play with the same determination and effort.

“If we do, I’m more than confident we can get another win.”
