AFTER their Ladbrokes Challenge Cup defeat at Millom, disappointed Bradford Dudley Hill received another "wake-up call" with a 24-6 loss in a pre-season friendly at Dewsbury Moor.

Facing a strong home pack and a vocal home support, Hill conceded a soft try by the side of the sticks to go 6-0 down after 12 minutes.

They were down to 12 men 13 minutes later when Martin Southwell was sin-binned for giving his opinion to a touch judge.

The visitors managed to ride out the storm when they were short-handed, only to concede another try and goal a minute before the interval.

Things got worse in the second half as the visitors conceded two more soft tries to the home pack near their posts, putting Moor 24-0 in front.

Then on 67 minutes, Southwell was sin-binned for a second time, having late-tackled the kicker.

It took until six minutes later for Hill to put a flowing move together. Fast passing created a gaping hole for Nathan Broadbent to hit a great line and score, with Simon Sewell converting.

Dudley Hill first-team manager Steve Wright said: "It was a bit of a wake-up call for what's needed this season.

"We were missing two of our main pivots in Tony Williams and Dave Halley. We also had Damian Smith missing, who has been a consistent performer for us.

"But we got too engrossed in challenging the referee on seemingly inconsistent decisions and also getting drawn in by the crowd, who were keen to wind us up.

"It wasn't all doom and gloom though. Isaac Brown showed what a massive impact he could have on our season, with some great work from acting half, and young Seb Russo put his body everywhere.

"Aiden Batey was back at full back in Dave's absence and was a tower of strength, getting the man of the match award.

"Neil Wall rolled back the years with a superb performance, while young Callum Wilkins is growing with every game at this level and is coming on leaps and bounds."
