NILE Wilson has the opportunity to make a further name for himself at this year's Commonwealth Games.

The 22-year-old has been selected as one of ten artistic gymnasts to compete for Team England at Gold Coast in Australia.

Wilson, who comes from Pudsey, will have fond memories of his appearance at the Games four years ago in Glasgow.

On that occasion he picked up two gold medals as well as a silver and a bronze.

From an individual point of view, he has particularly excelled in the horizontal bar event, winning gold in the discipline at the 2016 European Championships in Bern.

He also took bronze at the Olympic Games in Brazil 18 months ago.

Wilson learnt his craft at Leeds Gymnastics Club – as did fellow gymnast Ashley Watson, who has won gold medals in both the high bar and parallel bars at the English Championships in recent years.

It has been well documented how the performances of Yorkshire-born athletes have contributed heavily to British and English success, with the likes of Nicola Adams and the Brownlee brothers flying the flag for the region.

So there are high hopes for Wilson at the Commonwealth Games, with team leader Mike Weinstock saying: "We had some really strong competition for places on the England team.

"The team we have selected has a really good balance between youth and experience."

Team England chef de mission Sarah Winckless added: “I’m delighted to welcome the artistic gymnasts to Team England and I would like to offer my congratulations to the athletes selected.

"We have an extremely strong recent track record in artistic gymnastics, which led to the amazing Team GB performance at the Rio Olympics.

"I look forward to working with everyone as they compete for team and country in April.”

The artistic gymnastics competition takes place at Coomera Indoor Sports Centre from April 5-9.
