HAVING crawled over the line in his semi-final, Richard Brook could not repeat the dose in the tenth Spen Winter Sweep final.

The Mirfield Old Bank bowler had led David Hemsley (Oxenhope) 20-6 in their last-four clash but only ended up winning 21-17.

Brook's 19-4 lead in his semi-final became 20-6, only for Hemsley to take the next nine ends, and the relieved look on Brook's face when he won the 29th end to take the match was palpable.

Danny Sillitoe (Ossett Flying Horse) put his pedal to the metal to lead 20-2 in the final.

Brook then won seven straight ends, including four doubles, to narrow the gap to 20-13 before Sillitoe got the single that he needed to triumph over what was a tough field.

In the other semi-final, Mark Regan (Brighouse Sports) – having beaten Sillitoe 21-9 a fortnight previously – was favourite but Sillitoe got off to a flier, with four braces helping him to a 9-1 advantage.

Regan managed to close to 14-11 from 9-1 down but ended up the bridesmaid by 21-13 as Sillitoe put distance between the two again with a dominant six ends to stand on the brink of victory.

Regan then bagged a brace but could not deny Sillitoe his revenge.
