DOMINIC Poleon has been tipped to hit the goal trail for City again after ending a three-month drought.

Stuart McCall recalled him for Saturday’s 4-3 win over Rochdale – and the striker grabbed his chance with a well-taken finish.

It was Poleon’s fifth of the season but first since September 9 when he netted the opener as City beat Peterborough.

That was his fourth goal in six starts after beginning the season with a bang but he has been in and out of the team since.

McCall is confident Poleon’s scoring return at the weekend will kick-start his form in time for City’s hectic Christmas schedule.

He said: “Maybe people were surprised when I threw him in – I think even Dom was when I named the team on Friday morning.

“But we want him to play like that, be strong, be physical, do what he’s good at and get in behind defenders.

“He got in behind them when Charlie (Wyke) put him through for a one-on-one.

“Then he scores a great goal. But again that’s what we work on in training.

“When the ball is in a wide area, one player has to get across the near post and another at the back stick – Dom gets in front of his man and scores.

“It was a really good finish and that should give his confidence a boost.”

Poleon top-scored for Wimbledon last season with 13 goals, although only one of those came after the turn of the year.

But McCall insists he always has the knack of being in the right place at the right time to create scoring chances.

The City boss added: “Even when Dom comes on in games, he gets opportunities. That’s how he is.

“Look back to the Plymouth game in the FA Cup, their boy made a great tackle on the line from him or he would have scored then.

“What he does do, he always seems to get chances.

“Look at his goal-scoring record last season at Wimbledon, 13 in 26 starts – one in two.

“I just felt if we played Paul Taylor up front, he likes to come in and come short. I didn’t think there would be a great deal of football played.

“I thought the pitch would be dry and bumpy but there was a bit of moisture in it in the end and it was okay.”

City should have a couple of extra midfield options for this weekend's trip to Southend.

Timothee Dieng will have another hard fitness session with Chris Short this morning while Jake Reeves is being eased back. Both are pencilled in to train fully with the squad on Thursday.

City are back in training today after their Christmas party in Dublin on Sunday. The under-23 players, including Rochdale match-winner Tyrell Robinson, had a night out in Newcastle.
