STUART McCall reckons Wigan are League One champions-in-waiting – but fancies City to unsettle them on Saturday.

Paul Cook's men are currently a point behind leaders Shrewsbury in second, yet McCall believes they pack the power in squad depth to top the pile.

The Latics are unbeaten at home in the league since Aston Villa won there in March, with Portsmouth and Blackburn the only away teams to take points off them this season.

McCall insists City will be up for their sternest test so far at the DW Stadium.

He said: "For me, I would expect Wigan to go up as champions. They have got the strongest squad in the division by a distance.

"But we've got good enough players that we can go and win there. That will be our mindset.

"I believe that if the players are on top of their game, and there's no reason why they can't be, that we can win over there.

"In the big picture over 46 games, they've got the strongest squad both in quality and depth. They've got experienced players and I would imagine they will finish top of this division.

"But that doesn't mean in any way that we will go there with any inferiority complex. We'll give it a right good go."

Timothee Dieng will return to training this morning to give McCall a full squad to choose from.

The City chief is not too worried that the scoring has dried up – Matt Kilgallon's winner at Portsmouth was their only goal in the last three league games.

McCall said: "We scored four at MK Dons and three at Peterborough. But sometimes you'll have four or five chances in a game and take three.

"We know Charlton's goalie was the man of the match in our previous home game. It wasn't as though we weren't making the chances. On Saturday, Plymouth's keeper was very good.

"It's a concern if you're not making opportunities but obviously we'd like to be taking more than we are at this moment.

"We'll work hard this week and go to Wigan with a positive frame of mind to win the game.

"We know we're going to be backed by a good support – and as I've said, we certainly won't be going there to park the bus."
