RICH Pyrah bemoaned Yorkshire’s inconsistency with the ball as Surrey’s Kumar Sangakkara scored another hundred against them on a difficult day two of the Specsavers County Championship match at Headingley.

Sri Lanka legend Sangakkara sparkled in Leeds for the second time in a fortnight as Surrey made the most of a rain-shortened day to advance from 374-6 to 517-7 declared within the first 75 minutes of play.

He advanced from 82 overnight to 180 not out off 183 balls, scoring 98 of 142 runs to come in 19.1 overs as he became the first man in the country this summer to reach 1,000 Championship runs.

Yorkshire then replied with 27-1 in the eleventh over, losing Adam Lyth cheaply.

Play did not start until 5pm due to rain before more wet weather prevented any play beyond 7.10pm, which came shortly before tea.

Only 30 overs were bowled, excluding the two allocated for the change of innings.

"Kumar obviously played really well, but I didn't think we hit our lengths as consistently as we can,” said assistant coach Pyrah.

“It's a little bit frustrating.

“We know how important the new ball is with the pink one before it gets soft. I thought we were inconsistent and let him get away again.

"But he's a class player. When he's playing like that at the end, it's very difficult to stop him scoring.

"Kumar's as good as you're going to come up against, which makes it a really good test for us.

“But, like I say, it was key with the new ball last night and this morning. That was our best chance to get wickets.”

Two weeks ago, 39-year-old Sangakkara, who will retire at the end of the season, hit 121 in Surrey’s Royal London one-day Cup play-off win over the Vikings here.

Today, he helped Surrey to their highest team total in first-class cricket against Yorkshire in Yorkshire.

In sharing 158 inside 25 for the seventh wicket with Tom Curran, they posted a Surrey record for that wicket in first-class matches against the White Rose.

Sangakkara, who hit 21 fours and four sixes, reached his sixth century in only his eleventh innings off 136 balls with 12 fours and a six and his 150 off another 28.

He now averages 108.6 this season with 1,086 runs from only eleven innings.

He hit three of his four sixes today, including over long-off against Ben Coad the ball after he reached his sixth Championship century of the season.

Tim Bresnan picked up the only Surrey wicket to fall when he had Curran caught at third-man for 44, sparking the declaration.

Bresnan, Coad and Steve Patterson all finished the innings with two wickets apiece for the hosts, who now have Harry Brook in their side for the next two days following Gary Ballance’s departure to England Lions duties.

Jack Brooks and Adil Rashid conceded 109 and 107 runs from 18 and 16 overs respectively.

Yorkshire lost Lyth lbw to Sam Curran for eight in the eighth over of their reply, leaving the score at 11-1.

Joe Root and Alex Lees remain unbeaten on 12 and five respectively.

Conceding 517 comes a week after Middlesex posted 446 in the first innings at Lord’s.

Pyrah added: "I thought at Lord's last week we bowled really well on a slowish pitch.

“We created chances - a few didn't carry to slip early on, which would have made all the difference - and always had control of the scoring rate.

"This game, our lengths have been very inconsistent, meaning we've struggled to keep hold of the run-rate.”

Meanwhile, Yorkshire have announced that Will Rhodes is joining Warwickshire on a two-year contract from the end of the season.

All-rounder Rhodes, 22, has only played once in Yorkshire’s first team this season.
