MITCHELL O'Connor made one of the most impressive debuts in the 112-year history of the Priestley Cup as he powered New Farnley into the quarter-finals with an innings that few who witnessed it will ever forget.

The 33-year-old Australian, who captains Sweden's national team, made an unbeaten 168 as New Farnley secured a nine-wicket win over East Bierley.

O'Connor, who was persuaded to join New Farnley by cricket manager Paul Hutchison – Sweden's national coach – struck nine sixes and 21 fours as he powered his side past East Bierley's 231-9 with 19.4 overs to spare.

In-form Simon Lambert (40) had to play second fiddle to O'Connor in an opening stand of 151 as New Farnley's most-recent capture stole the show with a stunning array of strokes in his 109-ball innings.

Opener Adal Islam top-scored with 52 for East Bierley, while Zarak Khan (42no) and skipper Adam Patel (36) helped boost their side's total. Spinner James Middlebrook (3-42) and Dave Cummings (3-33) took the bowling honours for New Farnley.

In the quarter-finals on July 2, New Farnley will be at home to Premier Division leaders Hanging Heaton, who knocked holders Woodlands out of the competition.

Hanging Heaton's depth in batting proved invaluable as they recovered from a sticky start to make 230. Left-hander Joe Fraser top-scored with 76, hitting three sixes and 12 fours, while James Keen (43) also made important middle-order runs. Elliot Richardson (3-43) and Jamie Pickering (3-50) were the best of the Woodlands bowlers.

Liam Collins made a battling 43 for Woodlands but Hanging Heaton stuck to their task and dismissed Woodlands for 193 to win by 37 runs, Tom Chippendale being the pick of the bowlers with 3-49.

Birstall, who have not won a league game this season, caused the upset of the day as they defeated Championship One promotion contenders Wrenthorpe by 50 runs.

A second-wicket stand of 116 between Craig Wood (76) and Rishy Limbechaya (38) set the tone for Birstall's best batting performance of the campaign as they ran up a score of 295-6.

Siraj Hussain (64no) and Nick Kaye (56) swelled their team's total with well-deserved half-centuries.

Andrew Bourke (70), skipper Greg Wood (50) and Martin Donnelly (54) responded for Wrenthorpe as their side were bowled out for 245. Kaye (3-39) and Wood (3-46) followed up their good work with the bat for Birstall with good bowling stints.

Birstall will be away to Methley in the last eight – one of two all Championship One ties – after they defeated Gomersal by 151 runs.

Josh Sullivan is certainly taking first-team cricket in his stride. The 16-year-old followed up his five-wicket haul in Saturday's league win over Bowling Old Lane by taking 5-17 as Gomersal were dismissed for 99 in reply to Methley's 250-8, in which overseas opener Muhammad Akhlaq produced another solid innings of 75.

Neighbours Farsley and Pudsey St Lawrence are set for a showdown at Red Lane in the next round after both scored comfortable wins.

Farsley, who had bowled out Lightcliffe for 27 the previous day, showed no mercy to Championship One leaders Scholes as they dismissed them for 75.

The deadly duo of Mushy Rafique (4-15) and Chris Henry (3-24) were at the heart of the action again with the new ball.

Farsley cruised to a nine-wicket win, with skipper James Price scoring an unbeaten 66 in their 79-1. The South African opener struck a six and 13 fours.

Off-spinner Chris Marsden continued his good form for St Lawrence by taking 4-21 as they dismissed Premier Division bottom team Batley for 109.

Mark Robertshaw, who scored a century in the recent league game between the sides, made 50 and Adam Waite 43 not out as Saints romped to a seven-wicket triumph.

The remaining quarter-final is a second all Championship One tie between Morley and Undercliffe after both recorded wins against teams from their own division.

Spinner Amir Hussain impressed with 5-21 as Undercliffe bowled out Yeadon for 122. Opener Jake Wray (42) and Mohammad Saeed (32no) made the only notable contributions.

Overseas player Anas Mahmood hit 71 opening the innings as Undercliffe recorded a six-wicket success.

Morley's Sri Lankan overseas player Sangeth Cooray top-scored with 57 as they saw off Bowling Old Lane, a side who had already beaten them in the league, by 124 runs.

Richard Jubb (32) continued his bright start to the season as Morley compiled a total of 216-8 at Scatcherd Lane.

Old Lane struggled in reply and were dismissed for 92. Opening bowler Nathan Bromby did the early damage with 5-37 before Henry Rush (4-8) finished the job.

Quarter-final draw (ties to be played Sunday, July 2): New Farnley v Hanging Heaton, Farsley v Pudsey St Lawrence, Methley v Birstall, Morley v Undercliffe.
