JONNY Bairstow and Joe Root will fit straight back into our dressing room and team environment, almost like they haven't been away, when we face Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl today.

They will be with us for a couple of weeks before England's international summer begins early next month against Ireland and I'm sure they will have a big impact.

As a player who retains his place when they do come back, there are a couple of ways of looking at it.

Given there are guys who will be left out and go to play in the seconds despite being in good form, there is a little bit more pressure and expectation on your place.

But on the other hand, I think their presence in the team can give you a bit of freedom knowing there is so much quality around you.

I'm feeling really good about my own game at the moment. I was probably undone by a couple of poor shots in my first couple of innings of the season but I know that as long as I'm getting a start, I'll kick on and make that big score that every batsman craves.

I was pretty happy with the 36 I scored against Warwickshire. Myself and Peter Handscomb put on 88 for the second wicket and when you bowl a side out for 178 as we did, it's important you get off to a good start to maintain that pressure on them.

Of course, I'd love to have been able to add another 100 runs to that score. But as I say, I'm confident it won't be too long before I do.

Peter has settled in very quickly. He's a great bloke and he's in a very good place with his cricket at the moment, which is great to see.

His 75 was a match-winning contribution at Edgbaston, especially on a pitch that did a bit all the way through the game, and I think he will prove to be a great addition for us.

What can I say about Ben Coad? All the bowlers bowled well on that first day last Friday – but Coady was outstanding.

After his first game against Durham at the Riverside last year didn't go as well as he would have liked, to back it up and show everyone what he's all about is all credit to him.

We have all seen the improvements in terms of his skill and fitness but I think it also says a great deal about his character.

As a batter, when you start playing all you need is that one score to get you going and make you feel more at home. As a bowler, it's a five-for. To take a five-for and then a ten-for, he's certainly off and running now.

We've got a big squad at Yorkshire, even with a few injuries, so if you're not on your A game, there's a pretty good chance you'll find yourself not on the team-sheet. But he's pretty much undroppable now for the foreseeable future. Good on him.

This Championship match against Hampshire is the last of this opening block of three before we switch our attention to the Royal London Cup one-dayers for a month or so.

To take that confidence into the white-ball stuff is important for us. It doesn't matter what colour the ball is, if you're playing well, the belief does transfer from one to the other.

If we can right the wrong of losing to Hampshire last week, it will set us perfectly for Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge next Saturday.
