FORMER Newcastle Knights full back Jake Mamo is set to make his eagerly-awaited Betfred Super League debut in Huddersfield's home game against Catalans Dragons tomorrow.

The 22-year-old was the Giants' high-profile close-season signing but has been forced to sit out the first two months of the campaign after breaking an ankle in a motorbike accident while on holiday in Bali in September.

Mamo, who signed a two-year contract as part of a deal that saw former Bradford second-rower Joe Wardle move to the Knights, is now fully recovered and was named in Rick Stone's squad for the opening match of the Easter holiday period.

Stone said: "Jake's one of our off-season signings and it's taken a bit longer to get him to the post than we would have thought. But we've tried to be patient with him.

"I'm sure he'll give us a little bit of thrust and penetration in attack. He's probably a bit more of a running than a passing full-back. He's quick and he covers the ground well.

"He was a good deputy to Kurt Gidley at the Newcastle Knights. It's a good positive for the team and I'm sure it will give us a bit of a lift."

Stone, who has used half-back Lee Gaskell and youngster Darnell McIntosh in the full-back role for Huddersfield's first nine matches, expects Mamo to pep up his side's attack but warns it could take him some time to make an impact.

"He hasn't run for six months before this last couple of weeks and we don't want to heap too much responsibility on him," said Stone.

"He might even switch a bit between wing and full back in his first game or two, depending on who ends up in the make-up of the team.

"First of all, it's good to get him to the post. He's keen, he's watched from the sidelines for the first eight or so weeks and he's keen to contribute."

Huddersfield are also boosted by the return over Easter of Australian second-rower Tom Symonds, who has been out since picking up a knee injury in the opening game at Widnes.

Symonds could be a straight replacement for Dale Ferguson, who is experiencing headaches from a facial injury sustained in last week's 14-14 draw against St Helens.

Centre Leroy Cudjoe is set to return after missing the Saints game with a knee issue but second-rower Ukuma Ta'a is still struggling to overcome a back injury.
