KENNY Black hailed a rare header from Nicky Law as the midfielder's goal put City through to the third round of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Just 1,360 fans turned up to witness the Bantams beat Cambridge 1-0 and end their three-game losing sequence against League Two sides this season.

But this victory puts them just three games away from reaching Wembley and City had all-action midfielder Law to thank for getting the decisive goal midway through the second half.

Black said: "It was a fantastic goal. A great ball in from Fil (Morais) and a great header – it is something you wouldn't associate Nicky Law with but he has made a great run into the box and he manages to do that a lot. I'm delighted to see him get a header."

Law was moved further up field after Haris Vuckic was replaced and the decision paid off within minutes in the form of the winner.

Black wants to see the midfielder on target more often, though is delighted with the way he is performing.

The City assistant said: "He can contribute a lot more goals than he has come up with. He has got a lot of assists and been very prominent from day one of this season. He has been a top performer for us."

Black was pleased with the way City improved after a poor first half, in which Cambridge had the better opportunities.

"We were scratching our heads in the first half but as the game wore on we became more prominent," he said.

"There were not many chances for either side in the first half but Rouven (Sattelmaier) had to make a couple of important saves to keep us at 0-0.

"We were better in the second half and in the end it was a job well done."

Black, who is hoping for a home tie in this morning's televised draw on Sky Sports, was also delighted to see the return of Tony McMahon for the first time since the end of August following his recovery from a thigh injury.

He was brought on after 25 minutes for Stephen Darby in a pre-planned substitution.

Black said: "Tony did well and hopefully there is no reaction as he is important to us. We have a hectic schedule between Christmas and new year and we are going to need all our players fit."
