KATH Manogue proved to be the difference as Hermits I came through their first-round Tony Theobould Trophy encounter at Yeadon B in the Bradford League.

Hermits had a 159 start, so Yeadon needed to make early inroads into their deficit, but Manogue soon put them on the back foot.

She restricted Derek Greenwood to a 13-point win in the opening singles and, after Mick Burton and Martin Ashworth had recorded comfortable victories for Yeadon, Manogue dealt them a hammer blow by beating Burton 43-30.

Yeadon rallied in the remaining sets but their task was a huge one and Greenwood had to beat Steve Morris by 36 points in the last singles. He won 44-16 but, thanks to Manogue, Hermits got home by eight points.

In the league, Pudsey A are the early leaders in Division Two and they made it three wins out of three following a remarkable comeback at Hermits C.

The home side will be wondering how they let victory slip away after dominating the early stages.

Hermits led 4-1 as Shamir Bose enjoyed wins over Doug Bartle and Linda Sanderson, while Andy Braithwaite also won twice as he beat Zoe Cheeseman and Bartle in five games.

Pudsey began their comeback when Cheeseman came from 2-0 down to pip Peter Holbrook, then Sanderson produced a great performance to stop Braithwaite in three games.

Bartle made it 4-4 against Holbrook and Pudsey nosed in front for the first time when Cheeseman came from 2-1 down to beat Bose. Bartle and Sanderson then combined to seal an unlikely victory, taking the doubles 3-0.
