BRADFORD Dragons notched over 200 points in winning both their games last weekend – one in the English First Division and one in the National Cup.

Lancashire Spinners, beaten a fortnight previously 92-76 by the Dragons in the National Trophy, fell 102-96 in the league and, again at the Dragons' Den, Team Newcastle University Knights were defeated 110-70 in the fourth round of the cup.

Against Spinners, Bradford led 20-10 after five minutes but that margin was reduced to three points following a Lancashire time-out.

At the end of the first quarter, Dragons held sway 28-21 but they trailed by four points with 15 seconds left to half-time, only to turn that around and go onto the interval 46-45 ahead thanks to a Rihards Sulcs lay-up and a Rafi Saipe three-pointer.

But the visitors kept their momentum and led 75-72 at the end of the third quarter, only for the match to follow the pattern of their Trophy meeting, with the hosts pulling away in the final period.

Marcus Gooding – undoubtedly the game’s most valuable player - scored 39 points for the Dragons, including nine of his 15 three-point attempts.

Sulcs contributed 14 points and Ricky Fetske, whose parents were visiting from the USA, added 13 points.

Both Sulcs and Fetske took ten rebounds each to record double-doubles and, in a great team effort, Jermayne Laing and Jason Swaine each bagged 12 points.

Having notched their first ton of the campaign, the Dragons welcomed Division Two Team Newcastle University Knights the next day.

However, a cup rule meant that Dragons could only field one American, and Bradford’s head coach Chris Mellor made the difficult decision to rest Gooding.

The home side did not have everything their own way during the opening quarter, after which they led 28-23, but upped the tempo in the second period, causing Knights to call a time-out when they were trailing 40-29 three minutes in.

However, by half-time the Dragons were 57-41 to the good and, despite giving their bench plenty of game-time, it was 79-56 at the conclusion of the third quarter and 110-70 by the finish.

Saipe capped an impressive performance with 27 points to finish as the game’s highest scorer, and Fetske contributed 21 points, while Sulcs recorded his second double-double of the weekend with 20 points and ten rebounds.

Mellor said: “Against Spinners, it was a high-scoring affair where both teams shot the ball well, and we just managed to put a decent run together in the fourth to build up a double-figure lead.

“Against Newcastle, I wasn’t happy first half with our intensity but we played well in the last 15 minutes and our defence created a lot of transition opportunities.”

Both of Dragons' under-16s and under-14s were in action in a double-header at Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College on Saturday.

The under-14s beat Manchester Magic II 64-59, while the under-16s defeated Durham Wildcats 105-40.

The Dragons have confirmed that guard Rob Donaldson has quit the club due to work commitments.
