WYKE took the bragging rights in their Pennine League derby as they beat Brighouse Rangers 28-22 in Division One.

Last season's Wyke top scorer Ian Wormald started where he left off with a powerhouse try, allowing young Ben Proctor to slot over the conversation on his open age debut for a 6-0 lead.

However, Brighouse hit back though with a nice passing move to make it 6-6 at the break.

In the second half, centre Sam Kitson scored a lovely try in the corner, having taken a long pass from his brother Coby, to push Wyke further out in front. Wormald then popped up to extend Wyke's advantage, with Proctor again on target.

Brighouse responded valiantly and were on top for 20 minutes when their opponents' discipline started to slip.

However, Wyke were too quick on the edges with Sal Kitson being fed by young half back Gary Worley who duly dived over.

After a breakaway Brighouse try from poor ruck defence, Jordan Payton pulled off an exceptional ball steel 20 yards from the Brighouse line and crashed over to put the game beyond Rangers.

Proctor was accurate with his kicking, finishing with four from five goals to top off his debut.

Queensbury got their season off to a winning start with a hard-fought 28-20 victory away at Silsden.

Silsden took an early lead thanks to a converted try. However, Queensbury soon hit back through a 10-metre dash to the line by Gareth Crowther, which was duly converted by Robson Moore to level the scores.

Silsden's unconverted try gave them a 10-6 advantage before Queensbury's Brett Marriott crashed over for an unconverted score to make it 10-10.

Marriott then sent Nath Daly over the try line, with Moore duly added the extras to see Bury take a 16-10 lead. Marriott again set up Daly for his second of the game and, with Moore once again on target, Bury were 22-10 up at the break.

Silsden came out fighting in the second half and made the pressure count with an unconverted try to peg back the Bury advantage.

However, Moore sprinted 50 metres to touch down and slotted over the conversion to give Bury a 14-point lead.

And although Silsden scored the final try of the game and added the conversion, it was too little to late and Bury ran out worthy winners.
