BINGLEY St Ives, who were third at lunchtime, managed to turn their fortunes around to win the Bradford & District Union Team Championship at Shipley.

St Ives (297) trailed both holders Northcliffe (291) and Baildon (296) after the morning rounds but improved by six shots in the afternoon to win by two shots from Shipley, who were 20 shots better in round two than they had been in round one.

Shipley totalled 590, with Baildon third a short further back and Northcliffe, who were 12 shots worse than in the morning, dropping to fourth.

Ian Martin (Baildon) took the individual honours on 138 (68, 70), with St Ives' Dane Bairstow second on 139 (73, 66) and Cleckheaton's Nigel Colbeck third on 143 (73, 70).

Winning team member Terry Brushwood said the title was a boost ahead of their county championship defence next month.

He said: "This definitely gives us confidence for the Yorkshire First Division Team Championship at Bradford (on Wednesday, August 24). If we all play to our ability then we have a chance.

"But we knew we had to play better in the afternoon last weekend. We knew that we had to all improve by three or four shots but we wanted to win it as we had been so disappointing in the league (St Ives were fourth going into the final weekend), having won it for the past three years."

As it was, Bairstow was seven shots better, with a day's best 66, and Brushwood four as St Ives edged home.

Brushwood added: "With Dane it is just a case of on the day – he can shoot a 66 or an 86 – but neither I nor Jack Laybourne, who is working for his dad's engineering company, have been able to practise as much as we might."
