CENTURIONS Travis Head and Jack Leaning sent records tumbling to strengthen Yorkshire’s Royal London one-day Cup hopes with a massive 191-run win over Leicestershire at Grace Road yesterday.

Australian Head smashed 175 off 139 balls and York ace Leaning a career best 131 not out off 110 as the Vikings posted 376-3 batting first.

It was Yorkshire’s highest ever List A total against a first-class county, while the third-wicket pair shared 274 inside 37 overs, the county’s best List A partnership.

It was little surprise, given scoreboard pressure, that Leicester could only respond with 185 all out inside 34 overs. Bradford’s Adil Rashid took 3-23 from 4.3 overs.

Yorkshire have now won three of their five group matches and they are within touching distance of the quarter-finals.

"It was nice to get the win," said Head. "Where we are sitting, with every win we are putting ourselves in a nice position to play the play-offs.

"It was all round an unbelievable game, and we ticked all the boxes.”

Left-handed Head and Leaning, both 22, hit four and five sixes, predominantly over the leg-side.

For the first 20 overs of their partnership, they scored at a good rate without taking too many risks.

"I didn't actually feel great in the first 15 or 20 balls. Clint McKay bowled well and had the ball nipping around a bit. I found it tough,” said Head.

"From there, I tried to work my way into the innings and not take many risks.

"We were trying to get to 30 overs at 150 or 160, which we did. From there, we knew anything was possible with the batting order that we've got.”

Yorkshire went to 200 in the 34th over. Head had just reached a 99-ball ton, and from then on it was carnage.

The last 16 overs yielded 174 runs, with Leaning posting his second List A hundred off 97 balls.

Leaning has struggled for runs this year, only passing 50 twice in all cricket, including once for York.

But he hit 32 and 30 in Yorkshire’s last two T20 matches to indicate a return to form.

Yorkshire had lost openers Adam Lyth and Alex Lees inside the first ten overs as the score fell to 51-2.

Leicester’s chase got off to a poor start as they slipped to 55-3 in the 12th over, with Tim Bresnan striking twice and David Willey once.

Willey bowled Mark Pettini before Bresnan had Angus Robson caught behind down leg-side pulling and Kevin O’Brien caught at short mid-wicket.

Steve Patterson then struck with the last ball of the 15th and 17th overs, getting Mark Cosgrove caught at mid-off and Paul Horton lbw as the score slipped to 88-5.

Spinners Rashid, with his second ball, and Azeem Rafiq later struck three times inside four overs, leaving Leicester at 156-8 in the 30th.

Lewis Hill and Niall O’Brien shared 47 before the latter was trapped lbw by Rashid.

Hill was stumped off Rafiq for 55 and Neil Dexter caught at mid-off off Rashid.

When Rafiq had Clint McKay caught at cover, Leicester were 180-9 in the 33rd over before Rashid wrapped up the win by trapping Ben Raine lbw in the next.
