NAT Knight-Percival admitted he was “humbled” to join City as it emerged they could still be in the chase for another centre half.

Mark Beevers has been expected to join Phil Parkinson at Bolton after allowing his Millwall contract to run out.

But the Telegraph & Argus understands that a deal to take him to Lancashire is currently far from over the line.

It is believed City have maintained a keen interest in the Yorkshireman since Parkinson made an unsuccessful attempt to lure him north last season.

And if there are signs that Beevers’ move to the Macron has hit a snag, they may try to jump in.

Stuart McCall yesterday made former Shrewsbury captain Knight-Percival his second capture following on from Nicky Law. City beat off challenges from League One rivals Southend, Gillingham and Bury for the highly-rated defender.

The 29-year-old made 77 appearances for the Shrews, scoring six times, after signing on a free transfer from Peterborough in 2014.

He had previously played for non-league Histon and Wrexham before Darren Ferguson took him to the Championship with Posh.

McCall had spoken to Ferguson about the classy defender, who is nicknamed Rolls Royce because of his smooth style of play.

A very vocal centre half, he also played quite a bit for Peterborough at left back – and will offer City cover for James Meredith in that role after Greg Leigh’s departure.

Leigh signed a two-year deal with Bury yesterday after growing frustrated at a lack of first-team action.

Knight-Percival is looking forward to playing his part in a Bantams backline that claimed 27 clean sheets last term.

He said: “That’s my main job as a defender. Keeping clean sheets is what I’m paid to do.

“They’ve got such a tight group of defenders. The amount of time they have had together is brilliant because you get to know how each other plays and hopefully I can slot right into that.

“You want to build that rapport with the back four. You need to work as a unit because that will ultimately win you games.

“I’ve played centre half, left back and left side of a three. That left defensive position is perfect for me.”

Knight-Percival believes it was the right time to move on after rejecting a new deal with Shrewsbury – and admits he was taken aback by City’s interest.

“It’s nice to be able to talk about the other side of it and the expectation of trying to win things. You want that as a footballer, nobody wants to coast along.

“Halfway through the season when you’re in the relegation zone, you know it’s a case of just staying up.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Shrewsbury but when you get opportunities to go to bigger things, you can’t not take them. That’s just life.

“The fact that Bradford were interested in me was quite humbling and took me back a little bit.

“It’s a small step up because there are different goals at the end of it. But the expectations are always going to be high with the size of the club.”

McCall spent yesterday afternoon in further talks with joint owner Edin Rahic at the training ground as City’s hectic rebuilding period gathers pace.

A new head physio has been added to his list after Matt Barrass yesterday made the expected switch to Bolton to rejoin Parkinson and the rest of his coaching team.

But Knight-Percival’s first couple of days at his new club have already confirmed to him the high esteem in which McCall is held.

“You can see the manager is a big deal round here,” he added. “There’s so much respect for him and that can only help push us on throughout the season in going for promotion.

“The main aim is to keep on progressing and do what they didn’t quite manage last season.

“They weren’t too far away but if you can’t get the automatic spot, there’s always the play-offs again. It’s all about improving on before and the goal has to be promotion.”
