Lawn pitches in as City investor

City today unveiled successful businessman Mark Lawn as the investor who will be sharing power with Julian Rhodes.

The 46-year-old, who made his money from founding a driver recruitment agency in Bingley, has taken up the position of joint chairman after signing a deal which has wiped out the club's remaining debts.

A delighted Rhodes said: "This last five years has been all about reaching this solvent state and we are finally there. We've got rid of all the debts apart from a small overdraft facility.

"It doesn't mean there's going to be millions of pounds chucked at the team but it does give us a bit more financial stability and allows the resources we do generate within the club to go towards building the team.

"It's been a tough few years and Mark's involvement will help tremendously because we now have two people supporting the club financially.

"Mark is an avid Bradford City fan who, by his own admission, isn't in this to make money. He has got involved for all the right motives."

Lawn, who saw his first match at Valley Parade more than 40 years ago, set up Driver Hire in 1983 and saw it expand into a nationwide firm now boasting more than 100 franchises. He left the business in 1999.

Rhodes said: "Mark is somebody I've spoken to on and off for a number of years. He reapproached me in March to help out with a loan to keep the season-ticket pledge going and then we started talking about doing a deal again.

"He hasn't worked since selling Driver Hire eight years ago and this is the only thing he would come back to working full time for. He is raring to go.

"I'm quite happy to be in a joint position and it will be good to have somebody else to talk to and share the decisions. Of course there will be times when we don't agree but good partnerships are all about balance.

"Mark will be the public face of Bradford City. I'm not going to deny the fact I'm not really one for fans' forums and I'm more than happy to leave that with Mark."

Lawn's arrival hot on the heels of new boss Stuart McCall has already got fans licking their lips about next season, despite City's drop to League Two, but Rhodes has offered some words of caution.

He said: "Everybody is excited we've got Stuart and Mark on board but we've got a couple of very busy months ahead of us. We've only got a handful of players and we need to maximise the revenue before the season starts.

"It all comes down to how many people buy season tickets and spend sponsorship money and we really do need everyone to play their part. We need the positivity around the club to translate into finances that we can spend to rebuild."

The "feel-good" factor is getting better! Never thought I'd be so looking forward to life in the 4th Division - let's hope we are only short-term visitors! CTID.

Great news that the club are now heading towards stability. How about rewarding the local team who showed true support during the dark days at the valley. Eccleshill played a city collection of players in a friendly and donated all gate receipts to the trust fund. It would be great if city could now return to Eccleshill and offer a pre season friendly. It is always clubs outside the district who benefit from citys pre seasons, eg Farsley,North Ferriby, Harrogate. Support your local grass roots clubs who need the revenue that these friendlies can create. Even if it is a 2nd select team it would be welcome.

Excellent news.
After the Etherington fiasco, I know JR will have checked Mark's books. However, Mark has a good reputation that has been built up over a number of years, so I'm sure he could have been taken at his word anyway.

Excellent news for City. Lets now get on with the day to day business and build a team in time for pre-season.

Top of the list Mark.. Lee Holmes!

Shouldn't you be trying to push on Deano's move. As his agent, you should be on the blower to both Rhodes/Lawn and the Hull Chairman trying to tie up a deal, LOL,

As for Holmes, on a previous post, it was reported that he is a priority for Macca. However, he doesn't officially start his new job until Monday. JR has allegedly already spoken to his Derby counterpart about acquiring the player and a deal could be agreed next week.

Anyone else heard of other possible transfer targets?

Slight Concern, Shipley says...

My only concern with Mark Lawn is that he sold his company in 1999 and has waited this long to get in control! Why wasn't he trying to get involved after the 1st admin, 2nd admin or even just after Xmas when Windass and JJ had gone. An input then COULD have been relegation saving! It seems to me that he wants to be the next GR!

Don't get me wrong if this goes well we'll all be singing his name but i'm not sure he's doing it for the right reasons.

Role on August for the first game though!!

Paul, Wakefield...where have yiu heard this rumour?...as I had said on here a few weeks ago that I'd LOVE IT if he were to play for us, I think he would be the ideal foil for a quick 'forrad, and now he's 32 (I think), he might look at dropping a couple of divisions to play in what could be a successful team.
Always someone has to have a whinge, even when it's fantastic news. Roman Abramovich could take over and some people would still moan.

Well:

1 In 1999 we were in the Premiership and did not need the money then.

2. He probably did not have the odd 30 mil to throw away when we were in admin for the 1st & 2nd time.

3. Xmas the club were doing ok it was only January when everything started goin t!ts up and a month is not enough time to get everything sorted i.e looking over the books and everything else that is needed to invest in a club so we would have lost windass & jj anyway and then not been able to replace him and would you reall yhave wanted to give Colin Todd money anyway.

4. When McCall was given that job that would make any City fan want to invest, and for once we now have another to go with JR.

E I E I O Up the football here we go!!!

True CT, plus there are rumblings that money was only going to be put in if SMc was manager, and that wasn't going to happen until now. It's also good that we now have a public face for City, one who will talk to the media again, and give JR the roll he wished for behind the scenes. Good luck ML. CTID

CT, i appreciate what your saying and we shouldn't complain when people start giving us cash but i think there were other times when Mr Lawn could've "joined the party". It seems to me like he wants to be seen as the bloke riding down Valley Parade on a white horse thinking he's the saviour of all things claret and amber.

The amount of blind optimism is slightly disturbing considering we're BCFC fans!!

Although there is no-one more than me wants to be proved wrong!!

Not whingeing, genuinely want City to do well and progress. Just making a genuine comment about supporting local clubs at grassroot football. Regarding criticism towards Eccy. If it was not for the likes of ourselves and other generous supporters and businesses you would probably not have a football club to support. Whist acknowledging the fact that city need to play teams from the higher echelons of the league structure to give them a decent run out, maybe a 2nd string team could represent them.Other teams in the football league, ie Sheff Utd, do play against local grassroots sides of the same standard as Eccy.
Regardless, Good Luck to City.

Excellent news well done Marky Mark! Now I hope we can get rid of Intersonic, City must find somebody more suitable rather than a company allegedly involved in vat carousel fraud...have city been paid yet for the Stadium Sponsorhip?? Also why is Fazal Rehman (a known criminal allegedly) ex-director of Intersonic being allowed a directors box when he's not a Director of Intersonic anymore? Beware Julian he ripped me off and many others too.

Like i said, a 2nd team made up of youngsters etc. They could play all the local sides. Maybe with the odd draft of a 1st team player and the presence of Stuart McCall. This would generate income to give grassroot clubs a massive financial boost. It would also further boost Citys acknowledgement of the local community.

I was confident a New Investor would come in, and that this would happen eventually. Now it has allined my predictions yet again, that are spot on so far. I am so happy at the moment and I firmly belive we will be a great team again, starting with promotion at the end of the season, possibly as Champions. I can realy see us been Champions, if not at least the play- offs. I can not wait to get my season ticket now my aplication has arrived. This will prove all these doubters wrong yet again well done JR. Well with the McCAll Suplement in tomorrows T&A, I will be getting. I am so proud to be city fan, and I can not wait to get behind McCall and the team and any new players. UP THE CITY .

Brilliant news!!!!
As well as the financial benefits from his investment,Mark will provide a much needed link between the club and the real fans. This is an area which has been lacking at the club in recent years - i.e. communication with the fans.
Having sat behind Mark in the Sunwin Stand for several years, I know how passinate he is about the club.( I must say he is looking alot trimmer these days -- he must be missing the Otley pork pies we used to share at half time !!! )
With the club now in the hands of three of its biggest fans, I am sure all fans will be feeling more confident about the future.

Fair point. We should be supporting 'local' sides such as Eccie. Why did John ask where it would stop, such as Thackley or Guiseley. These are teams in Leeds that the Beeston Boys should be assisting.

I would rather we play Eccie than travel to North Ferriby! Even if it is to see this Hanson geezer finally play.

If we are to play lower league sides, they might as well be local.

se keep your pathetic ideas off City related topics and go fettle the reserve side. Eccleshill Utd are the most hated local side round here and their input into junior football is non-existent, even forcing them to hold their presentations and xmas parties away from a purpose built clubhouse. I don't want this to start into a slanging match whilst everything is looking positive for Bradford City at the moment, but every post I see you make is begging for Eccy Utd, pack it in, it is boring and not what this forum is about. Try have a chat on the local or junior parts of the T&A and let the adults chat about City and our forthcoming season. We do not want to hear about your thoughts on what City should do to help you or the measly club you follow. Why do you think so many players have left to join Bradford United? Cos Eccleshill treat the kids like poo.
Well done JR for keeping our club afloat and bringing us to this point, even if most haven't appreciated your personal sacrifices, time and effort as well as the money and deals you have had to make to ensure we carried on season after season. I appreciate you have had help from some quarters, but without you BPA could have been the only club in the area worth following. ;)

CT, i appreciate what your saying and we shouldn't complain when people start giving us cash but i think there were other times when Mr Lawn could've "joined the party". The amount of blind optimism is slightly disturbing considering we're BCFC fans!! Although there is no-one more than me wants to be proved wrong!!

DB, keep your thoughts to yourself. you were obviously one of the mice who followed the pied piper. Eccleshill is a thriving club where in roads have been made during the past 18 months with a toatal brand new committee. Like comments say, we would rather play local clubs like eccleshill than travel to north ferriby etc. you obviously have a dislike for eccleshill which is nothing to do with this forum. My son played for eccleshill, went to bradford united and then returned back to eccleshill. Say no mor. !!!!!!

been away for a day or two:just catching up:this is great news and a new start in reality.

Things should start to improve and let us all hope so:however a cautionary note as indicated by MACCA elsewhere. There is a lot of work to do:there are players to be brought in and there are results to be achieved: Rome was not built in a day as one famous Roman knows all too well.

What we need now is that positivity to continue, to sow the seeds of success and to start to achieve.

This investment by a local businessman is, hopefully, the start of something good and let us hope that it is a catalyst for other locally based businessmen to get involved and bring this club back to the premiership-- the support is there: the goodwill is there.

LET THE REGENERATION BEGIN

Dear Dear Mr DB,Bratfud. Stanley the manley hit the nail on the head.Regarding your comments about playing Eccy. My suggestion was to support local clubs as a whole. I am only personally championing the cause for Eccy. Like Stuart McCall has quoted, his aim is for BCFC is to become a community club. All the juniors at Eccy hold their presentations at the clubhouse. Our club started off as a junior boys club in 1908. We will still be around long after yours. It is obvious which club you belong to due to your pathetic comments... Finally good luck to all at Bradford City.

plumptonplank:

don't get involved:please.

the bottom line is that all us ardent Bradford City supporters have some great news in the investment in MACCA and new investment in the club.

It seesm that, unlike many other investors in football clubs,we have two genuine City supporters at the helm--people who are not necessarily in it for a fast buck and return on capital.

So the optimisim is high--we could be looking at week in week out record gates at VP:let's make it a fortress where teams fear to tread.

let us get right behind MACCA and not be too hasty in any criticsim when those defeats occur as surely they will.

Let us hope the new way forward will embrace local businesses , and other items I have suggested:let us hope the club starts properly to embrace all the schools with free/cheap match day tickets/discounted food vouchers or whatever-- allocate a part of one of the stands to local school children and parents only to make each game a day out that they will remember and want to repeat.

start the building process at local level and we can go forward long term.

Please let's stop having cheap pops at each other: we all have our views and opinions and these will be diverse BUT, at the end of the day, what do we really want?

maybe --a successful football team that we can ALL be proud to support

Maybe and hopefully things will change if as you say a new committee is in place, as a club the size of Eccy should be developing youth not destroying them, but as I said it isn't the place for a slanging match about EU, it is a forum to discuss BCAFC, and jsut because your son returned makes it ofd no significance. DB, I have 3 sons, all who have played for Eccy over the years. My eldest trialled at various league clubs whilst at Eccy. He received excellent comments from these clubs, which was all down to what he had learned at the club.If like you say as a player you were treated with arrogance and disrespect then why did you bring your kids to the club? I think that you just have a personal gripe with the previous aspects of the club. With regards to destroying kids??? There are players all playing at semi professional level eg Guiseley, Thackley, Sutton Town, and also with our first team who all came through the junior ranks at the club. Regardless of all this i will post no more comments on this blog. Good luck to you and the future of your son. I hope he goes on and defies all the odds and becomes a professional footballer. stan, thanks for your good wishes and may i extend the same pleasantries to you and yours for the forthcoming. I don't intend to cause upset or distress by my comments regarding EUtd just to say this isn't the palce to keep banging on about them as PP has been doing for a few weeks now.
It is a great time to be a City fan once more, and we should all be happy as for the first time in a long time. So firstly, apologies to those who regard my comments as ill thought or ill placed, but also lets stick to the topic of a discussion if possible and not meander to our own favourite 'local' teams. Up the City.

DB, i echo the comments that stan has said, like i say i will only champion my own club. I have spoken to lots of people who have had their kids at professional clubs and have complained of them as being ruined. It seems that they are best friends when their kida are involved and the worst enemies when they are not. This also applies to all clubs whatever level. Like Stan i will not enter anymore on this blog and also good luck as well to your son at Sheffield Wednesday.

It seems that they are best friends when their kida are involved and the worst enemies when they are not. This also applies to all clubs whatever level. Like Stan i will not enter anymore on this blog and also good luck as well to your son at Sheffield Wednesday.

PP and Stan, maybe I jumped the gun a little and pre judged the new set up at Eccy, I am talking from personal experience as I said, both as a player and youth coach. A new committee,Watson, and Pats ex-City, at the helm, maybe things are taking a new direction. I am no doing what I asked you not to which is chatting off topic, but as both of you have been polite and gracious I feel I have to respond in kind and wish both of you and your respective clubs/age groups the best of luck and may the coming season cheer us all. :)

So we are debt free are we? mmmmmm does that mean that all outside creditors are paid up such as rents for the ground to pension funds, the tax man, the vat man, and business
rates etc etc and that the balances outstanding to JR and family have been written off--if these are still owed the club is not debt free.

The accounts for year ended 30.06.2007 should make VERY interesting reading as this injection will be reflected therein:

This debt free situation is astionishing considering that only a few weeks ago we were told Windass had to be loaned out and that JJ had to be sold and there was a massive push to sell 10000 season tickets: and an astonishing turn round from that apparently reflected in the accounts to 30 june 2006-- has anyone examined those!!

so its not, in my view, all plain sailing with this new capital injection--things are going to be very tight and pennies will need to be watched--it is however good to see that a local business man is taking an interest-- come on the rest of the multi millionaires who have made their money in and around Bradford--a few million invested into a club is small beer and a good tax write off if need be: consider the benefits you would glean from that investment were the club to be successful again-- free advertising for your investment by way of good publicity for starters!!

CONTROVERCITY!!! LOVE IT!!
