WRENTHORPE were involved in their second nail-biting finish of the weekend as they defeated Ossett by one-run in their Priestley Cup Preliminary round clash.

Like the day’s other three matches, rain reduced the length of the contest and there was no shortage of tension as the two sides defied the rain and bad light to produce a compelling 25 overs per side match.

Wrenthorpe made a challenging 159-4 with Chris Leaf making an unbeaten 48. He was joined in a decisive unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership of 70 by Sam Wigglesworth (29). James Glynn had earlier chipped in with 33.

Ossett’s reply was dominated by opener Richard Whitehurst. The man who holds the record for the fastest ever Bradford League 50 off just 11 balls, led the chase with 53, He hit five sixes and three fours before becoming a victim of Jordan Sleightholme (3-33).

Umar Majid kept Ossett on track as the target was whittled down to three off the final ball. All they could manage was a leg bye as Wrenthorpe secured their place in the first round.

Their opponents on May 15 will be Brighouse who overcame Hunslet Nelson by six wickets in a low-scoring encounter.

Nelson made 90-8 in their 30 overs with only Patrick Hinchliffe (30) making a significant contribution against a bowling attack in which Danyaal Ahmed (3-13) caught the eye.

An unbeaten 37 from Wajid Hussain saw Brighouse to their target with 19 balls to spare.

Bankfoot recorded their second win of the weekend as they defeated Keighley by mine wickets.

Keighley were bowled out for 123 with Andy Wear (41) their top scorer as Kamran Siddque took 3-21.

Shoukat Ali sped Bankfoot to victory with an unbeaten 53 from 37 balls. He shared an unbroken second-wicket stand of 88 with opener Micky Hutchins (36no) as Bankfoot set up a trip to Townville in the next round.

Batley continued their impressive start to the season by securing a 123-run win over Hopton Mills.

The Batley score of 206, made in 40.5 overs, owed much to the efforts of Tariq Mehboob who made a determined 97. Ashley Mackereth was the pick of the Hopton Mills bowlers with 4-47.

Mills quickly ran into trouble in their reply and were dismissed for just 83 as Mohammed Shahnawaz took 5-22 and Huzaifa Patel (3-20). Batley’s reward for victory is a home clash with Saltaire.

The four preliminary round losers now go into the first round of the Jack Hampshire Cup. Hoptoin Mills will be away to Heckmondwike & Carlinghow, Hunslet Nelson visit Azaad, Keighley go to Rodley and Ossett will host Wakefield St Michael's.

l OULTON defeated Northowram by 84 runs in the only preliminary round tie in the Jack Hampshire Cup. Oulton made 185 before bowling out their opponents for 101.

The highlight of the Oulton innings was 83 from Qudratullh Khan batting at number eight which countered the earlier good work of Josh Bennett Keer (3-20) and Awais Matloob (3-26).

Robert Larner (30) and Dewsbury Rams rugby league coach Glenn Morrison (27no) were the top scorers for Northowram Fields as Matthew Boucher took 3-18. Oulton will visit Adwalton in the first round on May 22,
